About This File

All maps are: (i) medieval-themed, and generally very large compared to typical DooM maps; (ii) non-linear and feature multiple paths; (iii) feature castle and fortress architecture, fights on an epic scale, and magnificent vistas. Maps 08-10 can be played in any order within the hub, and powerups & enemies are different in any given map depending on whether you play it first or play it after entering from another map. This provides additional replay value.

This is a 7-map demo. TeamTNT intends to create a full megawad next.

Tested with ZDooM and GZDooM

I have to say this is over rated. I've seen every new monster before in a wad and the fucking wad messes shit up and it just gets boring. 3/5

I reviewed this further up the page, when it was still unfinished. This time I skipped straight to Map27, which is the big noise, and great fun. It's visually striking and feels like an entire game in itself, but suffers from the "uncanny valley" effect, whereby it looks like a good commercial Duke Nukem 3D level from 1998 rather than an extraordinarily adept, detailed, non-linear homebrew Doom modification (which is what it is).

Did some asshole actually give this a 0? Did he/she actually play the fucking game yet? Asshole. Getting back on track now - the architecture, map design, gameplay, and scenery are truly spectacular. Unquestionably a 5-star wad.

In the review 2 up from mine, someone asked if a 0 was given by someone. What could have made them ask that? Anyways, looks like a very good game and I'm sure the full ED4, when it comes out (probably not for a year or longer according to TeamTNT webpage), will truely be a classic. 5/5

The word legendary doesn't even begin to describe this game, even just as a demo! Espi's level is a work of art, and was truly his masterpiece. Rex's hub provided the game with a new feel, and Chris' three levels were huge and looked like they'd fall right into place in the original mapset. I feel, as a tribute to the series, and to Espi, the game should be completed into the full game is was meant to be. It will only reaffirm this as a classic!

Contrary to most, I actually liked Map13 the best. However, all three of Chris's levels were absolutely amazing and Espi's was certainly extremely impressive as well. As for the hub, I thought it was a bit confusing/could have used to be a bit more populated; it was the low point of the set for me, but nonetheless taken as itself would still probably be 4-star quality. The rest is 6-star quality, so I guess this earns its 5 overall from me!

Couleur's maps are mega fun for rocket jumping speedruns. Kinda wish jumping wasn't disabled on map13 - you can still rocket jump to the exit without jumping and without getting any keys. Maybe the exit door should be locked with a key.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
