About This File

All maps are: (i) medieval-themed, and generally very large compared to typical DooM maps; (ii) non-linear and feature multiple paths; (iii) feature castle and fortress architecture, fights on an epic scale, and magnificent vistas. Maps 08-10 can be played in any order within the hub, and powerups & enemies are different in any given map depending on whether you play it first or play it after entering from another map. This provides additional replay value.

This is a 7-map demo. TeamTNT intends to create a full megawad next.

Tested with ZDooM and GZDooM

the hub levels were pretty great. the Couleur levels...not so much. oftentimes i'd be wandering around a lot, plus there's always some monster spawning in places i've already been, making it somewhat of a chore to get 100% kills. Espi's Shrine is definitely worth checking out, if you could get past the gigantic Couleur maps. 3 stars, as the good and bad are quite even. it'll take about a day to finish all of it.

These are some really good maps, however they're somewhat too big for me. Each map (and the Hub maps) take well over an hour to beat, and by the start of Map14 I was a bit overwhelmed by having to beat another long map. While I do not doubt the greatness within these maps, it is simply way too large for my tastes. Everything else is pretty awesome though, 4 Stars.

May be the mapset is too large but quality is superb. 4/5

I love this, but there ARE bugs. For instance, the damaging lava floor near the blue keycard in MAP13 is of the "hurt player and end level when health is low" type - I doubt that's intentional.

Espi's level is the shit, everything else was so boring... too much random monster choises, too much textures, kinda unfocused. dunno what else to say. Espi's level: 5 / 5, everything else 1.5 / 5

The first levels felt very boring, but MAP27 was really cool. It's much better than the other maps. It is very huge though and I got stuck after getting the Yellow Key. That's my only complaint. 4.5/5.

This wad...er...demo is amazing. Huge detailed maps with greatly placed fights. I want more! If this is ever completely finished and becomes a 32 level wad, this will be beyond epic, it'll be a masterpiece! Did I say already I want more :D

Absolutely recommended download! I agree with everyone saying that map27 is by far the most impressive, but the other maps are defintely all worth playing though... in fact the overall quality in terms of visuals and gameplay beats anything I've played in a couple of time! Play this now! 5/5 -Vader

I simply love it. Can't wait for a megawad. The last two levels took me nearly 3 hours to finish each. Seeing wads like this doesn't stimulate much to do wad editing myself, given the time it took to create them. The architecture is truly stunning.

Although the maps may be large and imposing, they are badly textured, confusing, extremely boring and the new monsters were a bit of a let down, have 3 stars

Been playing Doom since the demo, half my life - this is simply the best set of add-on levels I've ever played. You won't believe how big these maps are. Like a Stephen King novel when he was good, these maps represent a thick wad of fun to get your teeth into.

Played for map 27, as recommended by essel. Found it open and spacious, which is nice, but extremely gloomy and depressing. Once I got into a city-canal region I saw the same old hallmark of established wadders: right angles everywhere. Not that interesting. Still, 4/5 for not being claustrophobic. -cjwright79

In the tradition of Team TNT's Eternal wads, the maps in this set are large and complex. Not as many switch hunts, but plenty of non-linearity to keep you on your toes.

Kinda disappointing if you compare it with Eternal DOOM. The gameplay isn't as fun as the original, and it lacks it's epic music.

This is a substantial modern levelset, hard to review in such a limited space. It has a mixture of new and old textures, all of which fit the theme, and some good sound replacements. Perhaps because of the medieval theme, the maps tend to be very square and grid-like and a bit empty, e.g. the endless sewers and empty corridors in the "Schloss Adler". It's a mighty visual feast, though, and of course it's not finished yet so it's hard to judge.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
