About This File

This level is based on the old town part Breton town of Concarnau. The old town is on an island in the river estuary. It is a very large level and is very slow. It is difficult, as finding good weaponry is not easy, and monsters come from all angles.

I enjoyed this and thought that it was a well made level for '96 (wish I had played it then as it would have had a greater impact).   Texturing is bland as another has said, but not terrible.   The thing I liked about this was how it kept opening up more sniper's nests to keep you on your toes.  I really liked the open-ended layout and thought the town was well done.   It's a good map for explorer type players.

A map with a interesting layout, is a good castle map with some stuff typical of the early years of mapping, even if this map is from 1996... however, is a good map to play, take a shot.

This is dated May 1996. It's basically a castle level, with a moat and a large courtyard. There are 311 mostly weak monsters. It's only hard insofar as the shotgun men tend to whittle away at your health; but there are lots of powerups, including an easy BFG secret and tonnes of plasma ammo. Overall it's nostalgic fun to play, but even for 1996 it's old-fashioned; the textures etc are competently done in a vintage style.

I thought this was a pretty fun level. It is a small, densely packed fortress city filled with imps and shotgun troopers, as well as a smaller number of other things, which tend to emerge suddenly and try and pick you off from a distance. This aspect kept me on my toes; however, there was a lot of health and good cover, so I was never in any real danger. Clearly very old, but also fun. 4/5

For an older level from the classic era, it does use textures in a basic way, and arguably DOOM's textures are not the best for a town design (less so that those from DOOM II, that is), although it seems to just be based on the idea of a town, and not to be an attempted imitation. It's interesting to play because of how monsters come out from different locations as you explore the nonlinear layout. [3/5] ~Chain Mail (04/2008)

Nice old map. Flows fast all the way. Recommened for oldschoolers.

Nice level! This took a bit too play threw. Plenty of monsters, check. Basic design? Check. Not perfect, but its a nice map overall. It does have the 1996 era written all over it however. 4 out of 5 from me!-Candle M

For single player it sucks, but may be a good TLMS map. 3 stars

Action packed level but unless you use the speed modifier not tough. Low on detail but the architecture is very good, it resembles a town. It looks older then it is (1996), recommended if you like oldschool. 4.5/5 coldfusio

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
