Played all maps in HMP difficulty with keyboard only. This is an interesting megawad which use several features present in ZDOOM such as swimming underwater, attacking monsters with help of friendly marines, flying upward through a giant fan among others. All maps are well design but few aren't balanced properly (for example E2M3 and E3M0, which really need more health). Speaking of E3M0, it is the worst map of the megawad, besides not balanced properly it's very cramped and all over the place. The best for me are E1M7, E1M8, E2M7, E3M3, E3M4, E3M5, E3M6, E3M7, E3M8 and E3M9. All the other maps are OK to play. I would reccomend only for those who don't mind some customs monsters.

I really wanted to give this four stars because the levels are beautiful and a lot of work clearly went into these, making a lot of use of ZDoom's features. However, I'm giving it three stars because the gameplay is a mixed bag. I wasn't a fan of Tormentor667's timed section (though there was plenty of time to complete it signs of where to go in that level aren't clear; I had to consult a YouTube video on where to find the red key). Some of the custom monsters felt cheap as hell to encounter. Finally, the last map can fuck right off, especially when killing the boss results in an explosion that drains your health. Considering all the other bullshit you have to go through during the boss battle, having enough health to even make it through that arena-wide explosion to get to the exit is a luck of the draw.

I'll likely play through this again at some point but not for a while. It's hard for me to recommend this as a full playthrough to others though. There's some standout maps in this collection that are worth playing regardless (Vader's and skillsaw's maps come to mind).

Pretty solid ZDoom megawad.  Very few maps that I found poor in quality.  Challenge level is acceptable, secret levels are pretty fun.  Wished more ZDoom wads were like this.

I would have rated this five stars, but failing to credit me for the boss music in E1M9 merits four stars.

Mixed bag, but as long as you avoid the bad maps that take 10 hours and play the good maps that take 10 hours, then you are alright

I would have to say that this was a pretty cool map set from the time I was playing it. The new monster designs kicked ass. It was very atmospheric and it had a nice layout on some of the maps. Over all it was tough, but good if you got nothing better to do. 4/5!-Candle M

A real mishmash of quality, mostly bad, I found most of the maps to be pretty lame but its worth downloading just for Vader's four maps and Xaser's map "Sector". - MasterOFDeath

Like the new CC4, a couple of maps are extreme standouts. In addition to Vader's Thunderpeak (even though it's been released separate) and equally awesome Blackrock, Zippy's Terror Cube, skillsaw's two maps (but mainly the latter of them), and Xaser's Sector are far too good to miss. I can only give 4 stars this time because there are a lot more maps compared to CC4 that are, tbh, pretty bland. But you need to download it for Terror Cube, Blackrock, skillsaw's E3M8, and Sector at the very least.

As always with a community (mega)wad, you have a mixed bag. Some maps are really cool, some aren't, but this project doesn't deserve all the bashing I've seen earlier. Wrote a small article on ZPack here, for those who can read French : http://lacommunaute. forum2jeux.com/pwads -f11/zdoom-zpack-t14 68.htm 4 stars. [WH]-Wilou84

At some point in episode 2, right after the first text screen, the game loaded to Map02 Underhalls for some reason. Otherwise a decent set.

Awesome collection of maps. Also, this is only megawad I played start to finish with Brutal Doom. Surprisingly enjoyable experience since BD tends to mess up balance on most wads I tried to play with it, making them either to easy or to hard. Not here. So if you were looking for maps that are good match for BD, ZPack is probably best choice.

Copy and paste and all the maps and all the rooms in every map look the same. And those black monsters that look like they're taking a dump and those anorectic imps suck. 0

You guys are really coming out as good level designers - that includes the kzidz crew :P Only an idiot wouldn't hire you guys to work for their game-making firm. Truly inspiring work. Possibly some people won't like it because of the fairly challenging difficulty, but in my opinion UV and the puzzle-solving is next to perfect. I'm yet to play a lot of the levels, but I Just couldn't wait to unload my praise for this quality megawad. Very creative design also. Mad props to all!

Like all community compilations, some are bad, some are good. The majority, though, are decent.

Nothing short of amazing for the most part, however one or two of the levels drag on, and a couple of others are below par. However, as a community chest styled project, it is a very good one. VERY recommended - 5*

Take these maps: E1M3, E1M7, E2M3, E2M6, E2M7, E3M7, E3M8, E1M8, E1M9, and E3M10. Bundle them into the first episode - call this the "main" episode. Then make two episodes for overflow levels (all the rest). Basically the maps I mentioned are where the real quality lies; the remainder range from weak to just barely "good". But I can't assess less than 4/5, because even as is, some of these great levels are way too good to rate anything lower. Definitely worth downloading and sifting.

Some mediocre maps, few downright awful ones, few potentially great maps that were ruined by fatal flaws (yo, Tormentor! never-ever-ever again put time limit in your map!)... but also many really awesome maps that make suffering through the rest more than worthy.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
