FLANAGAN

About This File

This is a modified version of sloth map03. It's a circular, symmetrical spam arena thing - again. FLAN - AGAN. It's designed for jumping, rocket jumping, and freelook, but you can get to the exit without using those things. It's not designed for crouching or bfg aiming.

The original version was made in June 2006. Rocket jumping was required to beat that version, but that was dumb. About a year later, I modified the map to be beatable without jumping. Then, a few months ago in May/June 2008 I started making a couple secret areas to add to the map. One of those areas is now known as SMEDLEY. In FLANAGAN, the platform that the yellow keycard is on was going to be a teleporter that took you to the start of SMEDLEY. Also in FLANAGAN, the platform that the blue keycard is on was going to be a teleporter that took you to the Quake e3m3 area in SMEDLEY. But, adding those areas made the map too long and laggy on my computer, so I released SMEDLEY on it's own.

The last two rooms in FLANAGAN (the smaller circle rooms with a crossed arch, one with an acid floor + key doors, the other with a blood floor + exit) are originally from rjsloth map06.

I tried deleting unused textures but I must be doing something wrong because I get a texture error in ZDaemon. So, I didn't delete unused textures - again. MY DEEPEST CONDOLENCES.

I'll try to make a cool new map within the next couple years, but for now I'm just going to keep polishing some of my old turds.

Oh, and FLANAGAN is the name of a cop from the game Road Rash 64, but you already knew that.

And oh, the music in FLANAGAN is a midi version of a song I wrote, called The Classic Fountain Pen. If you want to hear the recorded version of the song with guitar and drums, go to www.myspace.com/timeofdeath or timeofdeath.wrvids.com/music

Lovely, although the overabundance of invulnerability spheres makes it a bit less interesting - there's *always* one of these around, so you hardly are ever in actual danger.

This file was also replaced by a useless map but I just got a reply from the author saying that he did indeed upload these files as a way to delete the originals. Don't know why he did it, but at least I know it's not some new type of spam getting going, thank god! Anyways, my comments here and on the other files by this author (which all say What? .....) can be ignored and/or removed. Sorry for any inconvenience, I was just trying to point out a potential uploader spam.

One of the most painfully stupid and repetitive slaughter maps ever made.

This is a map made into an arena that is filled with a shit load of monsters. Ammo and health were plentiful, a bit way too plentiful. This is indeed a slaughterfest map. I am giving it a 3, for effort :D-Candle M

Shows perfectly why some players hate these kind of maps. I like them generally, Smedley.wad from the same author is very good, but this...runs like shit on a midrange pc, despite the architecture being quite simple; gameplay, while being intense is dull and monotonous, just your typical bfg fest and I love how some authors are so caring to use every Archvile clichee available...gah. A slaughter map should always involve some strategy. Besides, nuts.wad has already been made. - zero friggin' starz

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
