Doom: The Lost Episode

About This File

A semi-official 5th episode for The Ultimate Doom.

This project's aim is to bring the official and relatively obscure console-exclusive maps together in a single playable episode. Maps consist of levels from PSXDoom, Jaguar Doom, and the Doom Alphas, re-mastered in a surreal yet fitting "neo-classic" style.

Great effort has been made to preserve the flow of the existing playable maps (PSX maps mostly), though a few in particular are heavily modified for purposes of gameplay or aesthetics. The Alpha maps in particular have changed drastically, but only for the purpose of "completing" what was originally an unfinished map. There is also one mostly-original map, though it does bear some striking similarities to Spawning Vats.

Though many oldschool doomers may not view earlier renditions of these maps (i.e. Kaiser's excellent Consoledoom.wad) as "canon" in the Doom universe, this project is designed specifically to preserve the look and feel of these maps in a format that will sit side-by-side with the original four iD episodes. We hope you will view this project as not just an add-on episode, but the fifth chapter in the Ultimate Doom universe.

Prepare for Evil Unleashed.

A bold choice, not a very good one either.

The first map is clearly made of some recognizable Doom beta stuff (looks like maybe 0.4? Dunno been a while) but the "liberties" taken are absurd, this set wins the award for some of the worst visuals I have seen outside of Maximum Doom, some of the original Playstation exclusives have been, for lack of a better term, tampered with and odd little things have been added to them that stick out like a dildo on a windscreen for how horrendous they look.

This is sort of the official (but not really) extra/unused levels but with generally superfluous additions and terrible retexturing, 2 stars.

M1 a little confusing but great visuals. M2 was easy and ugly. M3 revenants...
M4 soo much detail, love that train. M5 a psx map already played and one I didn't like.

M6 a psx map already played but I like. M7 pain elementals how I love them.
M8 that archvile doesn't belong here. M9 already played.

You don't need d2 stuff to make good gameplay in doom. And there's a lot of inconsistency in the visual deparment.

This is okay.  Some unused beta content, lotta console content.  I can appreciate the increased difficulty, but some of the texture and music choices early-on kinda put me off.  Didn't much care for E5M4.

It's not terrible, but it isn't hard to see why the beta maps were scrapped from the final version of the game.  Give it a try, if you're feeling bold.

Good maps anyway. And thanks for Doom 2 stuff in Ultimate Doom.

Simple and very rectangular map layout, horrible texture use, very poor ambiance, and overly simplistic and boring gameplay. Overall it gave me a too amateuristic impression. 0.5* + 0.5 for the effort = 1*. Sorry, but IMHO that's what it is. BTW Quote 'Nothing wrong with this wad!' or 5* legendary? C'mon, that deserves a

I never understood why this was so underrated. To me it felt just short of professionalism, but it was fun and I could take it as a "fifth episode". I think it mostly succeeded at what it was doing, and I didn't regret my playthrough.

while it's true that you can play some of these in the PSX TC, I think that this is pretty neat to make a lost episode of lost levels, with some differences. it's okay in terms of quality overall, although E5M4 and the archie sprites in E5M8 turned me off.

I went back and forth multiple times on this wad, ending with the same conclusion everytime : disappointing. If it wasn't for the intermission screen and the text file, you could believe this is just a collection of random maps made by the same author who never bothered to get it playtested by anyone else, and as such it'd be worth 2 or 3 stars. As a team project supposed to be a new episode, with most of the maps taken from ports, it's not worth more than 1. Quality control, people !

If you're running Eternity be sure to disable "use doom linedef trigger model" by setting to "no" under game options/compatiblity if using Eternity source port. If set to yes, the red door in "ominous lair" e5m3 fails to open (will be stuck!). Best official (okay semi-official) expansion to Doom in existence.

It felt like a mish-mash of the worst E2 and E3 maps. Not goodlooking or enjoyable. "Classic" doesn't have to be tedious, look at E1, E4 or Plutonia for example.

This WAD left me speechless, and that very seldom happens. This I can say; the disjointed and unbalanced design make for a powerfully unpleasant gaming experience. These are so rotten they're offensive. For the love of God; avoid.

Overall this WAD is extremely underwhelming. You somehow managed to create the perfect combination of disorientating architecture and unappealing textures-Seems your idea of detailing is adding in a bunch random stuff everywhere. All of the maps you ported? They looked better on PSX, more playable before you jammed in 20 Gazillion DOOM 2 monsters. Overall, it's a nice concept, but the execution is lacking.

Brilliant. The people that made this WAD are legends. I found this going around the Doom Wiki, and when it said it features elements from the Doom Alpha, I came here to play it. This WAD successfully delivers a sense of nostalgia that my WADs have been using for years. This is one of the best WADs I've ever played. Very well done.

Well Done ! Some bugs however ... E5M6 ... Requires jumping to get the red key at sector 107. Sector 107 is tagged but no equivalent line tag. Eternity 3.33.90+ ("Simorgh") ... Cannot obtain the MegaArmour.

Well I only made it to e1m3 before my eyes threatened to jump out of their sockets in protest. Visually the wad is pretty bad, a poor jumbling of textures and flats, sometimes seemingly at random. The gameplay is not as bad as the visuals but it is by no means good. It honestly looks like someone inserted some DOOM monsters into a different game and called it a fifth DOOM episode.

...They raped Tom Hall's and the Williams team's levels. Also, look how arrogant the authors were in the text file! "not just an add-on episode, but the fifth chapter in the Ultimate Doom universe"? Chex Quest was more of a fifth episode than this crap! 1.5/5 (because the original levels were decent, at least)

One of the most visually unpleasing and worst playing map sets I have ever had the misfortune of encountering. The fact they butchered perfectly good console exclusive maps and then tried to pass this off as some sort of "Episode 5" just adds insult to injury.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
