This is old school doom at it's very best. Just fun and 'fast' shoot shoot shoot, dodge, reload and repeat style gameplay. No gimmicks. Reminds me of what got me into doom in the first place.

great fun all around, there's some questionable design decisions strewn about but that almost adds to the charm of the whole thing. 4/5

it's ok but it's not very memorable.

Gameplay has DOOM 2 style traps, and the enemy placement is quite 'in your face'. Difficulty spikes up a fair bit on second episode and suddenly the given ammo isn't quite balanced with the enemy types and numbers you're up against.

Brilliant set of levels in that unmistakable Romero/Petersen style, it's almost as if id Software themselves made another 3 episodes before Doom 2 came out. Simple but attractive design, well-themed locations, and difficulty ramped up a bit from the originals. Proof that extreme detailing doesn't mean shit if your gameplay is on the ball, and this most certainly is. One of my favorite wads ever. Would give 6 stars if I could. 5/5 -jj

This is incredibly fun to play and doesn't need more detail!

IMHO part of the current "Holy Trinity" of classic Doom WADs (besides "Wonderful Doom" and "Doom the Way id Did"). The level design remains true to the original, no significant texture changes (besides the "NMD" logo on doors and crates) and music from the original game. The only thing which is missing maybe is a dehacked file for adding changed level names to automap, but that's nitpicking. Will always be on my hard drive when I have Doom installed. I suggest you do the same. 5/5 - NightFright

It's not a bad set of maps, but nothing you haven't seen before.

I've only played E1 so can only critique it. Very nice episode. Certain map motifs repeated too often, but otherwise very well made. Could have perhaps had a little more creativity map layoutwise and monster traps never tricky, but otherwise nice atmosphere with nice recurring architectural motifs. Aesthetic and detail level are near perfect. I agree with other reviewers: this is more like how Doom should look and the types of levels that should be made for it.

Oddly I actually think this wad exceeds DTWID. I think this and 2002ADO are the best Doom I megawads, DTWID and BGComp are very good runner-ups, and Vengeance and Invasion would fall in last though they're all worth playing. While I can't really find a concrete reason in that I like this MW even more than DTWID, I just know I do. It doesn't mimic the original quite as closely, but it also just seems to have something DTWID lacks a bit. Something I can't really place. A must have wad. 5/5

Absolutely 5 stars, possibly the "spiritual precursor" to DTWID.

Favorite classic Doom I style out there. Beats DTWID for me.

I agree, this isn't a pale imitation with silly rules holding back the gameplay. 5/5

Yeah there's kind of a parody here. The author called it NMD since it has no "modern" aspects. But of course with the style that's actually a big positive. It very much captures the Doom I feel, w/o "imitating" it. Now the irony comes in - this might be called Needs More Detail but it ends up being DTWID itself that really does "need more" of something, not detail but just substance in general. Shows that, even when going for the original flavor, things work best when strict limits are avoided.

Very very good wad, exactly like 'Old Skool' Doom should be - Great levels all based on the originals and gives you that 'warm glow' inside!! Cheers, Doommeister.

It's like DTWID except with the NMD semi-joke (which has no real affect on things) and that the maps simply abide to the style of the originals rather than an attempt to strictly copy their style element for element. If you liked DTWID, you'll probably find yourself home here too, and if you didn't like the former because it seemed too much of a style copy, this might be a better cup of tea for you.

It's pretty obvious that this is a terrific map set for anyone who still enjoys the original Classic Doom. 3 episodes, 2 already released but updated and one new, each in the style of their original counterparts, with design, architecture, and gameplay all what you'd expect for this type of set! Hope it doesn't get overlooked!

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
