About This File

This project started on January 10, 2006. The first NDCP had been completed and released. Towards the end of that project talk had been going on about a sequel, and thus this project was formed. PumpkinSmasher took the reigns as project leader and started map sign-ups. The goal was not to take near as long as is took to finish the first NDCP. This goal was not achieved.

Potentially good levels that needed more playtesting.

Definitely one to cherry pick, as one may say. The quality control with regard to bugs went pretty much in the trash unfortunately; additionally there are other maps that are just not much fun. It's not a total waste though - I found a few gems. And even though it's also available separately, Map22 is an absolutely must-play map for any puzzle/non-tradition al map fans. Maybe even the wad's highlight, for that reason alone.

Communication broke down between mappers. Som that promised to finish maps never did. People with finished maps had them tampered with. This could have been great but it was released VERY unfinished. -jetflock

The initial release is badly bugged, and doesn't run in all the ports it's supposed to (not to mention other mapping mistakes, like texture alignment, not-unpegged doortraks and so on). The maps itself are, as usual, a mixed bunch which is actually a Good Thing, since you can never be sure what the next map will be like. Some of the maps are pretty meh, some have nice moments, there are even a few really nice maps (Plutonic Dusk

Some good levels in here but others a bit of a disappointment. The music selection in some of the maps isn't great (heavy rock is good but some of the tunes are awful). But its still good, just a bit too overdone. I think you'll still enjoy this megawad. My favorite maps were Map06, Map10, Map11, Map19, Map26 and Map29. My overall rating is 4/5 stars

Finally it reached the archives... There are a few flaws, such as the obvious Map02 unplayability, some maps being really evil coop-wise, etc. But as for the rest, I LOVED this wad. Jetflock's maps made my jaw drop. This gets 5 stars just because of Jetflock. 5/5 - Moti

3---- lev 7 started off nicely but got stuck in the yard where the mancubi were on top of the boxes and the imps teleported in the rippled metal door wouldnt open too bad was having fun level 8 really cool looking and tight gameplay creepy attention keeper but sorry again got stuck in the room where you get the blue key and where the plasma gun is the outer door shut and I couldn't get out probably a port problem but nicely done up to that point anyway

I cannot give this a full grade, because it clearly isn't as good as it could or should have been, as its parent community unfortunately fell apart leaving a bugfixed/improved version in the dust. However I can recommend 1, 9, 11, 12, 18, 22 (although it has a separate release), 23, 27, and 28 fairly wholeheartedly, so in the end it is worth the download, especially as many of the maps listed above are fairly expansive so you'll be spending some time playing even just the best parts.

I think the layout is often too confusing. I want to make progress relatively fast, not run amok in circles. I also think the player is punished too quickly for small mistakes. However, I think the maps are rather good. I'd love to get some demos :)

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
