Very nice! But there is at least one bug: in E1M7, two demons are stuck inside each other near the level's exit and thus don't teleport in there like they're supposed to. Still, 5/5.

Logan's an idiot. This is a great episode, with some innovative designs. The gameplay really shines especially compared to the latest wave of ZDoom tripe. 5/5

I've got to give rf kudos for making an entertaining episode for Doom 1 that isn't a caco-and-baron slaughterfest. Impressive. -Creaphis

An utterly fantastic mapset. Especially notable is rf's trademark brilliant usage of moving floors to create some really impressive and unexpected changes to the maps' layouts during gameplay. A well-deserved 5/5 from esselfortium. :)

Fantastic set of maps! It would get a full 5/5, but I'm going to have to deduct 1 point for not allowing anyone else use the awesome new textures and sprites.

Fantastic maps! Hated that chaingun replacement though, and the centry turret was rather strange. Oh, and that new shotgun sound was pretty cool, but it felt pointless. 4\5

Solid map pack, but it has its flaws. The new sound for the shotgun is very annoying and I hate the replacement for the chaingun! If the flaregun would have been made a bit stronger to replace the plasmagun it would be okay, but still rather pointless. Another disappointment is the final map. The exit looks nice, but I would have expected at least some sort of fight after crossing that bridge! 3/5

Absolutely Great levels. No need for GOD mode. Just take your time, pick up ammo and health and work your way through while strafing. 5/5

Episodes like this are why DooM is still around after 15 years. Beautiful architecture and excellent gameplay make this a must for fans, old and new. This is going in my personal archive. Thanks rf! 5/5- d.d.koop

I thought it was okay, but not very engaging. The brightness for the rooms was too high as well. After all, doom 2 was made because doom 1 got old and this was 13 years ago.

Pretty good. But sometimes it was like "WTF did that switch do?". Oh and sentry turrets are lamest enemy ever... in every game.

This is an excellent replacement for Doom E1. The graphics are HQ, crisp, clear, and boasting great originality, but there's still some nostalgic hints here and there. I love the game play--smooth, straightforward, fun with some good fights (very classic style). This has to be one of the most imaginative E1 replacements I've played. Some replacements/remakes tend to just change a few things from the classic maps and that's it, nothing new. But this is totally fresh and creative. Great job! 5/5

pretty good stuff. i actually really liked the shotgun sound replacement but i do have a gripe with that flare gun, maybe it should have been placed under slot 9 or something instead of completely replacing the chaingun. 4/5

This is a really nice episode replacement of Doom. In fact, this is probably the first mapset in a while that I have thoroughly enjoyed. The map design has an oldschool feel to it, but still has a modern (as in the kinds of Doom maps being designed today) flare to it. That shotgun sound replacement is cool, but I didn't like that flare gun. The new color palette is really nice. 5/5

This set really kicks some major *ss. The levels look great and manage to have some E1 feel well while not being an absolute duplicate in style, and the challenge factor is never lacking. A few minor complaints: E1M2 can be finished with 2/3 keys if a non-secret shortcut is taken, no keys are required to reach the E1M3 secret exit, a rad suit should have been provided on E1M9 to avoid risk of it becoming completely impossible, and the final fight is a bit dissapointing. Still 4.5(5)/5, excellent work, rf!

Sheer brilliance, the best mapset I have played in a while, I liked the pallete, and subtle texture edits, not to mention some decent sprite editing. I think that this has now compelled me to finish my episode. ***** - Abrax

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
