About This File

A rather large map featuring spacious, open-air environments, a dark cave system below, and a river. It'sabout a twelve minute affair if you know exactly what you're doing. Speedrunning was not a consideration while making this level, and you can make it to the exit without killing a monster in no time at all. Please tell me if you enjoy this level! I have more on the way. :)

I like my map but in all honesty I did abandon it by the time the river gets up to where Mr. Archvile lives.

DON'T WORK PROPERLY WITHOUT SOURCEPORT (all maps by this author contains (at least) skilled DB "3D mode start", that prevents original exe from running)

A pretty good map for a wadmaker who's been away from the game for over a decade. Nice work. 5/5

^^ No Doom 2 had much more creative and interesting design. I think the theme and level layout should have been a lot clearer in this wad.

It certainly has its good points, but it felt a bit too random and badly done to impress me properly. Beats a lot of the stuff the author did in 95/96 though, and is probably on par with the one '00 wad he's got uploaded. 3* -Phobus

The starting area looked decent, but then it all kinda falls apart when you continue on through the level. I hated how dark the cave system was and the level design felt really confusing and the level's theme is very unclear. 1/5

Probably Cjwright's best work, surprisingly.

Starts off with an interesting circular room with an attached underground that goes pretty deep underground. Nice atmosphere here and in the next area -- kind of a marble courtyard with pillars and flowing elegant architecture. Could use some more polish and playtesting though -- minor HOM issues, and way too much health and ammo supply on Easy, and not enough mobs. But overall the look & feel is quite pleasing, I'm giving it a 5. Non-orthogonal, curves everywhere, and inventive design and architecture.

Like something straight outta Doom 2, in a good way, some interesting oldschool architecture. Far too much health, and some random item placement (green and blue armour right by one another). Also some HOM (may not show in a hardware renderer). ***

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
