Can be great looking and moody at times, but is more often than not just purely annoying. Some crappy new enemies, every so often a frustrating trap, overuse of fog to a point where some enemies just blend in with it at a very short distance from player, and some bizarre changes to base gameplay: like lowering movement speed once player health falls below 30 or so, or replacing wizard's start weapon with weaker alternative that makes early maps particularly frustrating.

It's average at best. The functions, particularly slower player speed with lower health, can really be a hindrance to enjoying the game play. Often frustrating, but does have the occasional aesthetic greatness.

I love the maps - I love their atmosphere. I love their design. This megawad is almost perfect... But it's too difficult sometimes and the couple of last maps are almost impossible - I mean... No mana, no health... Very difficult... (enkeli33)

Big downpoint here is that author decided to nerf the player in a very unorthodox way: when your health falls bellow certain point your movement speed is significantly lowered. So, if you get yourself in a situation when running away is only way out... well, many times you will be as good as dead. Really horrid design decision that severely damages wad that is otherwise actually pretty good. 3/5

Some nice and very atmospheric Hexen levels. New monsters and weapons were (typically) unbalanced, but overall I had decent fun with it.

I'd honestly enjoy this quite a bit if it weren't for the fucking fog in every level

The Soul Sphere as a weapon would be great, if it's firepower lived up to be something great, rather than just a chaingun inside a ball. I like the Mage's tomed traditional weapons, but all new ones (except for the purple dagger of the Fighter) are horrible. And my one pet peeve of heXen of all time is all the mist/bluescreens: it hurts my eyes. And this wad is full of it. The Cleric's weapons are just a joke.

Unreasonably hard ememies, and every new weapon is either a fantasy chaingun or a fantasy plasma rifle. The scripts were completely broken half the time, and you will need to crouch (without any hint that you need to). And sweet zombie Jesus that fog effect is overdone.

Beautiful maps visually, but the gameplay sucks shit. The player is nerfed and there are nastier monsters all about (some of which are kind of crap). Worst of all, you run cripple-slow when your health is low, so you don't even get a chance to retreat, heal and regroup. Might be enjoyable to look at in god mode or with -nomonsters, but for playing... pass.

It would have been nice to have seen a HUB and the boss monsters are a little brutal and not that much fun to fight (The death knight's shield is annoying and that dragon really needs less hit points and it's attack needs a to be nerfed). Otherwise, I had a blast. I want to see more mods like this. 4/5 - Captain Red

As much as I been waiting for a good Hexen mod, this is not it. I'll be honest. Heretic and Hexen are two separate games, and honestly, need to be treated as such. Seeing Heretic in Hexen or Hexen in Heretic is really out of place and do not belong. This is referring to the weapons and new monsters mostly. The level design was pretty good, but the Heretic like weapons really killed it for me. New weapons in Hexen must either be done carefully, or not at all but this is just my 2 cents. 2/5

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
