All the rooms felt the same except with an extra detail to distract the player. The regenerating health made it too easy in some spots, the mapper relied on that too much and so wouldn't give health out where the regen. had no effect. The quad shotgun was just weird and was hardly any more powerful than the SSG; I found myself using that over the QSG because it took less time to reload and I didn't have to worry about manually reloading it. That is some bad inconsistency.

It's like dealing with bitches: even if you don't pay cash, you will pay one way or another. The author completely killed any enjoyment I had with the last map and the screwing around with secrets on map 7. ***

After fighting that last boss, now I know why everyone hated the Doom 3 cyberdemon. WHAT IF I RUN OUT OF FUCKING CELLS? I'm completely screwed at that point, I can't even use the two signature weapons of this mod like the Qsg and the megachaingun against him (which I probably should be able to since they're the signature weapons)! I could tolerate just about everything else like the endlessly spawning enemies or no automap because it was a short set of levels, but that was asinine.

More of a Painkiller clone that a Doom 3 clone and, as noted in many previous reviews, not a very good Painkiller clone. Still, I can't call this a worst Doom mod ever or anything, on account of how much effort went into detailing and visual polish. This is worth trying out just to what kind of visuals can be achieved in Doom today.

A bit repetitive in some battles but still amazing! Best wad ever created for GZDoom! Must download!(off: I´d not say it has a Doom 3 touch, it has a mix of Doom 3 visuals with Skulltag invasion) - Fabio914

Doom 3 atmosphere is very successful. Sound, music, effects are perfect. But gameplay is not my cup of tea. A trap after another trap, and then another trap, and 100 more, all based on melees. Needs medium battles. Good job but improvement 3.5/5.

Credit Doom64 for the sprites that you ripped from it, fuckbeat. Other than that and the square maps and repetitive gameplay, I think this is quality material. 3/5 from me!

Most of the levels are completely square with the exception of a few square sectors put into the walls randomly with a pipe made out of 3d floors inside it. The level design felt clumsy, and it looks slightly below average. Most of the gameplay involves running into a room, the room locks behind you, and monsters spawn in. I don't get why so many people like this, but whatever. If the author makes a sequel, I hope he fixes these problems. It didn't deserve an award.

Sorry, but this is godawful. Maps are super tiny and simplistic, something author tried to mask by removing the automap. Encounters are horrid. Already at map 2 you will have tons of cacodemons being spawned in tiny area with little room to move. Author tries to balance encounters like this with large amounts of ammo and health regeneration (without which this wad would be impossible to play). Not fun, not scary, not a good Doom wad, not good shooter on its own. Just bad.

Doom1, Doom2 or Doom3 and I'm happy wasting all of 'em. This masterpiece is mapping at it's finest. The 'DOOM' style of game-play skilfully of all games has been blended superbly. On UV -fast, it certainly gave me a workout! This HAS to be the best wad to date of 2009! Shirley! A perfect 5/5

This is amazing, the implementation of the special effects for monster projectiles is incredible, the play, suspense, weapons, choice of music is fantastic, it truly is a standalone game different to doom - a twin if you like, not a clone.

Usually I don't like obvious and repetitive traps with teleporting monsters. But this time awesome atmosphere and coherent design of the episode made me forget about that. Very very nice work. I almost forgot how much of the adrenaline could computer games give. And LOS is pretty good in that. Thanks a lot!

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
