One of the more overrated wads out there. The atmosphere is nice and all, but it seems that Logan can only map square rooms and hallways, and as a result, the gameplay is really boring and repetitive. Also, the automap is entirely hidden without cheating. Not a good thing. Health regeneration is used to even the gameplay up in favor of the player; without it this wad would be much harder for the wrong reasons. This wad would be much better if someone else made the maps. 2/5

I'd say it's kinda nice. Rather fancy, but the level design so far is really mind-numbingly dull. The textures are all ripped from Doom3 and the health regens (regenerating health is ultimate fail in FPS games like Doom). I'm rather torn about this one, so I'm giving it a 3/5. Had the maps been better, it would have helped a lot. - Kristus

Boring square maps with boring gameplay. It looked average at best. As some other have said, the gameplay is the same old shit most of the time. Walk into a room, door locks, kill monsters, go on. 0/5.

All right, so I must admit there were some portions of the wad I didn't much like (fights in particular were very cramped), but what makes this wad great is the *atmosphere* -- Though it could've played a bit better in places, it just *feels* right. I don't believe it was a mistake that this wad won a Cacoward, making it one of the year's best at any rate, am I right? A smashing debut, Logan -- looking forward for more, I am. **** -Xaser

DooM3-like mod, awesome work. Gameplay not so great, but the feel is. Even it's DooM3-like, it still a mod on DooM engine, so make automap useless by make all lines are invisable is a f***ing bad idea. Final BOSS is a little annoying, but I can accept. And... DNF joke is shit and boring, please don't put it to your mods anymore! :p 4.5/5 -playerlin

Good in almost every single aspect but gameplay, which is sad since the ideas, visuals, and the flow of the story were so well-done. 3/5

An epic masterpiece. But a lighter version for older computers (windows xp?) would be kind of nice. 5/5

These ugly square rooms took three years to make? Basically, you enter a room and fifty monsters teleport in while the door locks behind you and you have to defeat them to progress. Rinse and repeat for all the maps.

It's difficult and dark, and I guess that's why it gets compared to Doom 3, but I found the gameplay tedious. You wander through empty, creepy hallways til a boatload of baddies appear and it becomes a melee slaughter-fest. That gets old. And the new weapons are cool but when the hordes descend reloading gets frustrating. Not bad, not great.-GreazyShorts

Excellent wad, though the map design's were a bit linear the gameplay was still top notch! I enjoyed the invasion parts of the wad. The cut scenes were really well done too. The regenerating health was also cool. ( I didn't have to spend an hour looking for medikits) 5/5 - Sniper 109

completely bad in almost every gameplay aspect. Too cramped, too many hitscanners, pitiful level design. Most fights are you mowing down hordes through a doorway. To think, people actually like this... I have no words.

Very nice mood and atmosphere. Good use of ambient sounds, music etc.. The level and trap design was somewhat repetitive. Weapons, ammo, balancing was fine and manageable on UV. I definitely enjoyed that one. Would like to see more. - Cacodemon

I have problems with the performace, and come on, its DOOM... Other thing is that you could put more ammo (3 years working in this great wad but problem with ammo?) A good wad, but never the Best. 3,5 / 5

I actually like Doom 3, always did. And I can see if mod is good for what it is, even if it isn't my cup of tea. But this... this is just bad. I can respect the effort, and the fact that you tried to combine classic Doom and D3 (something very few mods try) but end result is sadly almost painful to play.

Quite possibly the worst mod ever made for Doom 2. With cramped hallways & no room to dodge, ammo starvation ill-fitting the Painkiller-style forced battles, confusing progression made worse by automap-invisible linedefs and fast Lost Souls. This mod is a textbook example of what not to do when designing a mod. This mod is all flash and no substance. Do not be fooled by the high ratings, they were astroturfed by the author and his buddies.

Wow, what is there to say about this one? Exellent looking levels, enhanced graphics all round. Although the gameplay is linear, so too were the original levels and the fighting in this is freaking awesome, especially on Ultra Violence. 5/5

All around fantastic detailing and atmosphere. shame author didn't put same effort into gameplay and good level layouts. This took elements from Doom 3, Painkiller and also from modern cinematic shoters, and it doesnt exactly result in fun and enjoyable experience. Worth a playthrough I guess, just dont expect neither classic Doom nor actually good modernization of Doom gameplay.

The maps may not be that big or particularly long overall, but the action more than makes up for it on UV. Great detailing, the new guns are pretty fun (Cannon Shotgun can kill Hell Knights in one shot if you alt-fire all four chambers at once at close range), the whole seeing the hellish mark thing flash briefly gets pretty old quick (expect enemies to appear whenever you see it) but overall it doesn't detract too much. 5 Stars, bravo. -Traysandor

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
