About This File

Originally I made map27 and called it Area42, and the whole project Area42, as the story then was set a few years after doom2, when UAC is cleaning up the bases it lost control of when the demons invaded. But that expanded into a minimally-plot driven episode spanning a short 'training mission' that ends with you teleported to the sewers of a different base, travels through that base and some more places on the way to Area42, and from there the player descends to hell through the fortifications of Atlantis and then the lost city itself. And hell isn't exactly your traditional MAP30 ...

As far as 'Slaughter' wads go, this is definitely one of the better ones. The core gameplay is good and there is plenty of ammo around to deal with things. Architecture is also great. However I'm not a fan of these kind of hyper-zany widdly widdly midis though. Still worth checking out though.

A fairly good set overall. I can recommend it. Slaughter haters stay clear though.

OK, let's try that again and hope that Doomworld won't be so stupid and eat half the comment... MAP30 is simply great. Also, to the previous reviewer who got confused, look for roman numerals. ;)

Nice slaughter episode with some decent design/architecture throughout.Starts off pretty easy then gets progressively more difficult.Had to save on map 28,dying more than once-staring at a mega/soulsphere[heh] .Map 29 was really nice-looking in the courtyard and city part.I couldn't beat level 30,though I tried and died many times[looks kinda funny on the automap].This one was made fun due to all the health and ammo present.Good fun!4/5-d.d.koop

Beautiful slaughter maps. Map29, a bit too repetitive, had serious slowdowns in prboom+2.5.0.6 but played fluently in prboom+ 2.5.0.7. Pretty darn good, coldfusio.

The first two maps almost made me stop playing this, to be honest... But then I entered Map22. From then, it only became simply amazing. Map29 brought out the BFG spammer in me, haha. This wad is NOT easy, but yet, really fun and highly recommended to people who enjoy slaughter maps. 4/5 from me. - Moti

Only the later maps were good, and the music was mostly daaamn annoying. What up with this anime/manga stuff? This is Doom! Anyway, some really great maps, and some not that good. Also some HOM`s and whats up with the major texture alignment issues in map 25? (think it was 25, "Native ruins" or something). Hmmmm, have to go woth a 3/5 this time.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
