Hellfire Abyss is what happens when a map author thinks of a setting for their level and fails to move beyond that. Sure it is a nice looking hell level with a ton of detail but that comes to the level's detriment. I typically don't do this but I am reviewing this level despite not finishing it. Why you may ask? Twice I died from becoming stuck on some piece of detail. It is one thing to get stuck on a piece of detail but another to constantly keep getting stuck on something and even dying from it. This trait in addition to the boring, unimaginative monster placement and annoying music tells you the author did not have much in the way of playtesting.

Looking not bad, but the sky and some texture on some slopes look like shit. Gameplay is a little sucks, but near ending it is better. Some reviewer complaints about monsters placement randomly, I don't agree. But I feel some part of detailing cause project weapons near useless because they blocked many enemies...

I'll give it 1 star because it looks nice, and another star because the atmosphere was eery. Architecture gets in the way of movement big time, killing gameplay and the decorations also get in the way of movement... next time please get people from Doomworld to playtest your map.

Beautiful architecture, no gameplay. 0/5

I actually liked this. Sometimes, there were annoying obsticles in the way, and maybe there was a bit too much detail. But, it was a very beautiful hellish map with a lot of originality. I enjoyed the music, too; it sounded like an enchanting fantasy-type track but with a haunting, eerie twist. Great lighting effects, good architectural designs (for the temple). Overall, I liked it but maybe tone down the detail a bit. 4/5

I had expectations from the size and GZDoom requirements. But then I was disappointed, greatly. The map is non-linear and looks stunning, yes. That's the good part. ONLY. The bad parts: Music is annoying as hell, gameplay is non-existent: monsters thrown everywhere, randomly, with no reason at all. Same goes for ammo. Secrets are all incredibly easy to find. If it wasn't for the nice architecture this wad would've been one star. I'm giving this 2.5 (3) out of 5. Better luck next time! - Moti

The architecture is stunning; gameplay is average. There is a major glitch that allows you to bypass the entire level by making a series of jumps near the exit gate. Jump on the stalagmite to the green torch to the exit post and then over the gate. 3/5

I really think this wad deserves some revisiting. It could be quite decent with better attention paid to monster distribution, difficulty, and ammo placement. Also, some of the architecture can obstruct gameflow.

or you can grab the invulnerablility sphere and rocket jump to the end and let the cacos hk's and baron's infight, then finish them off. Got 3:05 on a first try doing that. The map plays horribly, and the slopes are used to an extreme, which just doesn't look good to me either. Less Zdoomism's plz. 1/5

This wad wasn't bad. Of course it was pretty difficult even on Hurt Me Plenty but the structure of the map was pretty nice. I think you could've done something different for the sky box; instead of lava, you should try red or orange clouds; I think it would be more logical. For the gameplay, you may want to cut down on the pools of lava, even in a heavy combat area. Also the amount of space in the outdoor areas was kind of tight. Challenging & not bad at all. -Alando1

I thought this was a lot better than these reviews suggest. The only thing I found annoying was getting stuck in the vegetation but other than that nice job.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
