About This File

This megawad represents the collection of the maps, created at various times, and united by one common theme - the ideas put in my first wad, Hellfire. Map 01 represents remake of map 01 from Hellfire, however the gameplay was essentially remade: there are few surprises waiting for you. Map 02 - 04 are created from scratch, and are exploring the "city" theme, ìàð 05 is Hellfire`s map 21 remake, with essential re-worked of some locations. I also wished to pass some atmosphere from Doom's e3m1 on this map. Map 06 is created from scratch, and represents new variation of the infernal river Styx. At its creation, I've tried also to reproduce Doom's atmosphere from e3m2, but at the same time - using monsters from Doom 2. And at last, map 07 is a re-creation of map 03 from Cheogsh 2, as far as limit-removing format allows to do it. I hope that those players, who couldn't estimate for some reasons this map in GZDoom, can enjoy it in PrBoom-plus.

Maps 01-04 were made in Boom format, maps 05 - 07 originally have been constructed in limit-removing format (since there is Boom's action of sky transfer). Have a good game!

This is great!!! Nicely designed rooms, computer traveling you to doom dimension, destroyed city, temples, etc. Great atmosphere! 5/5 - Optimus

Could the author have picked a worse last level? Anyways that aside it is fairly good. It's a double-offense though, having a map be frustrating AND deciding to re-use it.

Good atmosphere and looks to the thing... but I'm honestly not having any fun at all. Map04 was especially congested. I get the concept, but the execution could be better. 2/5

Map01 was pretty fucking brilliant to be honest, I loved how the Doom 2 file kicked into the reality. The maps all flow greatly in terms of gameplay and look great. I didn't like the train map as much, and I was disappointed to see that dreadful Temple of Seth as the last map, I've had enough of it in Cheogsh 2 so I skipped it. Though one thing for sure, this wad deserves 5 stars for all the other maps, map03 in specific. Great work! - Moti

Agree with the (silent) 5's so far; this was quite good. Same styles as Hellfire (1) but shorter and better design/architecture. I didn't like Map01 that much but it was short. Map03 has a missing blue key on easy/medium but a new version fixing that is pending in the archives. Difficulty wise it is very hard on UV, good challenge on HMP, not so hard on easy settings, making it suitable for most types of players. A worth-playing wad. 4.5/5

It takes me a while to play through many maps so let me say dang: maps one and two are amazing! Map 2 had me by the balls for so long (I underestimated the enhanced pistol zombies and maybe I Just suck) but I beat it on attempt 1! I had to make use of all the health kits and secrets, ha ha. I look forward to playing the rest when I have more time. 5.

Pretty damn awesome! Too bad this isn't a full megawad. The last map was really long and the end felt really anti-climatic. Oh well. It's still worth checking out.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
