E3M9's refrain of back-tracking to a church for keys is a little tedious, and there are a few moments where things can become a frustrating key/switch hunt as you figure out what to do next, but aside from that, this an intense and rewarding adventure with beautiful lighting and architecture.

By this point, this is THE Heretic megawad. Iconic, beautiful, really hard and just full of frantic fun. The first pwad I played for Heretic and one of the most memorable.

This is a legendary Heretic wad which I was really looking for. The maps are really amazing and reasonably varied, richly detailed and fun to play, but sometimes there were so much monsters, making it too hard. The weakest point is that it unfortunately does not have any custom/original music. It simply reuses the native Heretic music, which is boring to hear over again, cutting down the gaming experience, thus -0.5 points. 4.5/5

The only good thing about this is the level design. Where it really matters - the game play - is awful. Too much reliance on infighting, levels drag on for way too long, and artificially difficult by throwing mobs at you from start to finish. Also hiding half of E3M4 from view even with a map scroll obtained is a dick move.

I see that in my original review I accidentally rated this 3 stars, don't know how that happened and I'll correct it with this one. This mapset is the reason I started mapping. Mindblowing, grandeur and majestic today as it was back when it was first released, it takes Heretic to a new level while still keeping fitting in the Heretic universe and is absolutely mandatory to try this if you're a fan of Heretic.

Loved every bit of it. It's the best Heretic map set I've played since I played the original Heretic. The architecture and the overall presentation of the maps is excellent. And the gameplay is challenging but not incredibly frustrating. Just perfect, can't think of any other way to put it. I sincerely hope Kristus makes more Heretic maps in the future! 5/5 -Mek

For all the people saying Heretic was easy even on 4th difficulty, mustn't remember E4M1. That level was hard as hell and took me nearly 50 tries (with saving the game very often, of course). But that was because I played in HERETIC.EXE and no source ports, so it was harder to aim, etc. Anyway this episode was also hard but much more enjoyable (unlike E4M1, seriously). I played at fourth difficulty. 5/5

Difficulty is high, especially in the early maps where you don't have much space to fight hordes of enemies. Later, it's getting better. Anyway, it's a must-have due to the superior level design. Be sure to check out E3M4 (Herakleion), E3M6 (River of Ladon) and E3M7 (Icicle) which feature impressive architecture. It's a sightseeing tour you'll enjoy and hardly forget as a true Heretic fan. 5/5 - NightFright

Mostly good. Some maps are 5/5 material, but there are also some really boring, way too long maps.

Someone has spammed with low votes without leaving a review. Idiots. This is an incredible feat of level design. Screw wads like LoS and Cheowhatever, this is how good level design is done. 5/5

The reason why this is so amazing and why everyone seems to love it so is because it's completely like original Heretic (no horrible imported/new graphics) except on steroids. All the levels are large so so emmaculately detailed. The architecture and enemy placement is PERFECT. 5/5

From this point, heretic will no more be pathetic and easy game. And on all sides it is amazing project: beautiful and majestic like Eternal Doom, epic and hard like Hell Revealed. Hail Kristus!

Not only the best Heretic wad around, but these are some of the most impressive maps I've ever played with both unique, beautiful architecture and wonderfully challenging gameplay. 5/5

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
