About This File

You're a Space marine...

Disease. An incurable though tangible threat. The demons prowl among the scorched barrens of Mars. Fleets of cacodemons infest every region. Spectres and imps swarming from every crevice. Deep down under Mars' subterra lies UAC's immense labyrinth of superhuman technology. The underground top secret lair of their most horrific experiments, buried in distress.

This is UAC Ultra.

An 11 (and a half) map levelset for Doom 2 featuring all new textures, a new monster, new music and several other small touches. Difficulty will hopefully keep you on your feet without being ridiculous.

The texture set is available as ultratex.wad

v1.2 fixes bugs on all maps. Plus it works with Eternity. Thanks esselfortium and Doomworld!

The only thing one could find wrong here is that it's not a full megawad. Other than that, play this and you know why this hopefully will get a Cacoward. 5/5 - NightFright

Best mapset ever. If I'd ever have to recommend a wad to anyone, it would be this. The storyline, the progress, the consistent theme is brilliant, but what got me sold is the very clever traps and designs that I've never seen before. Map10 was my favorite, with Map09 being my 2nd fav. by very little. This is it, the wad of 2010. Amazing work, 40oz and Super Jamie. 62362352/5 - Moti

An amazing mapset that dark, grim and challenging but still put a smile on my face. The new monster is excellent as is the map that introduces it - in short these are my kind of maps, and now in my top 5 WADs.

Uh, original? This is drab, brown and boring looking. Architecture itself is solid, but the textures do nothing for it. Gameplay is fast, but not challenging at all. Way over-rated. 3/5

#1 badass. One of the best megawads I've ever played. The difficulty's just right, the design is excellent, gameplay is comfortable, music is really nice, overall a 5/5.

This is a great set of levels. The end was neat and the pacing was excellent. The only thing that I have a problem with was the new monster. The graphics of it doesn't look like something that should be in doom. 4/5

2010's first Cacoward nominee. Astounding in every department, especially since the whole thing was done in Boom. I'm sure I'm not the only ZDoomer who feels well and truly put in his place by this WAD. Stunning and full marks - scalliano

This wad was so awesome I'm left speechless. Sure the graphics are merely "good", but the gameplay is EXACTLY what Doom should be. Lots of fighting, limited health, but more than enough ammo to make it by and assure a lack of frustration throughout the whole thing. I don't remember a moment of it I didn't enjoy. The second half was even better than the first. It was so fun that any criticism went right out the door - to the extent that I can't even remember what it was if I had one. 5 stars.

Some of the best gameplay I've experienced in a doom wad. Music really helps the atmosphere of most of the levels. Forgot to rate this when it was uploaded, so yeah, 5/5. -Snakes

11 map episode based on a rusted/metal/industr ial theme bringing a dark atmosphere with some great gameplay ranging from fairly easy to semi slaughter style in some parts. An excellent wad which it's style is unique enough to avoid downmarking for being similar visually throughout the 11 maps. 5 stars

This wad was not bad at all. The textures worked well with the environment and map structure. Most of all, the gameplay was challenging yet not overly difficult. Of course in the places where Arch-Vile pops up, those battles were a bit tedious. Other than that, I enjoyed the whole thing. There was plenty of ammo and a nice amount of health. It has a bit of old school Doom mixed with new school. Nice job. -Alando1

One of my most favourite wads ever. So well detailed and very original; it really takes you into it's world. I've played through it twice now. I would give it 10 stars if I could. Play this now! -TRRobin.

I don't like wandering through 10 almost identical looking maps to be honest. The layouts weren't different or unique enough to keep me interested either, save for a very few areas here and there. Gameplay is good with some nice ambushes, but the quite linear progression through the maps as well as the overuse of SSG-suited fights kind of ruined it for me... didn't care for the new monster 3/5

Seemed quite easy for me most of the time on UV, although one or two areas did kill me (much to my dissappointment, as I was feeling pretty unstoppable until then). Very good fun though! 5* -Phobus

Superb mapset! GREAT pacing, with some nicely challenging sequences throughout and several memorable set-pieces. I've noticed a few people criticizing the art style as too drab or "samey", but I thought keeping the dark industrial theme consistent worked in its favour. Having that continuity between levels made me feel more like there's a defined story progression, rather than just a series of random, non-interconnected maps. Brilliant work. 5/5

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
