About This File

This is my way of seing the map 8 of the first episode of Ultimate doom, phobos anomaly. This level, like you've guessed, replaces the e1m8 of ultimate doom and features monsters from the realm667 site, textures from various sources(some from kdizd, zpack and alot from the nb5d1.wad), scripting, etc...

Lol, I actually replayed this recently... I guess I shouldn't have ^^" As a result, I decided to start it from scratch and implement what I've learned over my experience in doom making. No release window yet as I only did like one room lol

I agree with the failure comment. The start is blatantly copied off Thunderpeak. The rest is the few E1M8 rooms connected by featureless hallways and a bunch of tedious Baron battles in empty rooms. Play this if all you can do is circlestrafe. 0/5

Great detail, shitty ending, but 4/5 for detail

To me this felt like a modern, Knee Deep in ZDoom interpretation of E1M8, which is cool. I didn't really see how the author copied Thunderpeak, but I will agree that several of the battles were long and tedious. The difficulty was marginal and I never even had to save or load. The layouts were well thought out except for some backtracking that detracted from my experience a bit. Overall I'd say 4.5/5. Hope to see more from you!

I highly enjoyed this. The original "Phobos Anomaly" is one of my all-time favorite classic Doom maps, and I love the song "Sign of Evil." I usually don't like it when people try to remake this classic map, but you did really good. I loved the HQ graphics and updated tech look. It looked like a somewhat modern take on the original map. I liked the dramatic lighting effects--very creepy and gothic--and I found that most of the rooms, save for two, were excellently designed. Good work!

First of all, it has nothing to do with e1m8. Secondly, copying Thunderpeak, even partially, is not a good idea. 3 stars for effort.

It's not bad because it's a Thunderpeak ripoff. It's bad because that manages to be its most redeeming aspect. Cramped, ugly, not fun, badly laid out, and with no original thought.

Another failure in the sea of E1MX replacements.

Lots of architecture, textures, and detailing ripped off from Thunderpeak, and pretty much no other redeeming qualities. It's cramped, ugly, the theming is random, and the layout is a mess. If you like what you see in this, just get Vader's "Thunderpeak" and play that instead; anything remotely worthwhile in this WAD was taken from there.

It's a KDIZD + Thunderpeak style map with some flaws but I can't see any reasons for 0/5 or say it's a failure. The shitload of shotgun boxes is not a good idea, and when you only killing about 20-30 imps and 2 cacodemons with those boxes, what a "overkilling" and waste in ZDooM map(I'm playing in UV). :p Yeah, it's not so good but a so-so map with good looking/detailing. Needed some works about ammo balance and monsters replacement. 3/5 -playerlin

Way too easy/too few monsters.

Looks pretty, but way too easy. The switches of unlimited rockets and bullets in the final room worsened that. An amazing quantity of particle effects! You should rename this PARTICULATE ANOMALY, THE RECKONING or something.

Pretty fun. The beginning was rough, but difficulty smooths out later.

Looks good/detailed, nice layout, but gameplay is rather dull. There aren't any surprises, too much ammo(with saw/berserk near start and less ammo it'd be more interesting). The end battle is more tedious than exciting, there's too much room. It'd be interesting to see the custom barons with tracking missiles - with that much space, and/or more spawning of other monsters (aka HR clusterfuck). Should have stayed with fast monsters, but the custom imps kicked my ass at start so I got scared. 4*

It's really just a very cheap rip of Thunderpeak. Avoid.

Much better than the t/nc review makes it out to be (and some of the previous reviews here, too). It's a nice level, fun and entertaining; not without flaws, and parts show that the author is not an experienced mapper yet, but hey - it's still good! To the author: keep it up.

This is like a cheap take on Thunderpeak. It might actually be decent if there were more monsters and a better challenge. As it is, fine to look at, not fun to play.

Really awesome level. The beginning is rough, but overall the gameplay is well rounded.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
