About This File

A medium sized classic doom map with an decent layout and entertaining gameplay which leans more to the easy side. The map started out as nothing really serious, but for some reason the map kept interesting me long enough to finish it. Its probably not the best map that I have made, but its definitely one of the most classic looking ones I made so far. Some areas feel like they are inspired on doom E1 while other areas look more like E2/E3, so its a bit of an mixed bunch of themes.

Very fine map. Some backtracking at the end was a little underwhelming; as was the overall flow of the map, but the architecture was fantastic. Architecture/Theme: 5 stars Gameplay: 4 stars

Man this is what I crave, what I live on! This, right here, is really refined and balanced gameplay. It's addictiveness is like crack. A must play for fans of classic 90s gameplay.

This IS Doom! What a blast!! Haven't played a map with such a high degree of Doominess since Knee Deep in the Dead! Progression is natural, difficulty is superb for a map of this kind, what a rush!!!! Feel good map of the year!

This is one of those maps that make you go, "Oh well if I had known that then I'd have played it completely different." I did end up doing quite a bit of backtracking. I played on HMP and it was a bit on the easy side. There was more than enough ammo and weapons for the enemies encountered. I missed one secret and one item somewhere. Thanks for a nice way to spend my afternoon. **** - sparerib1968

Please make more classic style. An very nice map :). (BTW we only write 'an' when the next word begins with a vowel (a, e, i, o, u)). But please don't stop writing 'an' because I always lol when I see it. Anyway 5/5 from me.

^No problem, guessing it's June 20, 2010. And make more please, I don't even care if it's classic style because all your maps are good.

nice one. looks good, gameplay's strong. i'm not such a fan of the only-90 degree angle architecture, but that's just me. worth a runthrough. 4/5, with a special gold start for the map not being for DOOM2. NT

Very good looking vanilla map (yes, works fine under vanilla Doom too, so this is in the wrong directory), with a large variety of visual themes that blend convincingly, and decent lighting. Too linear, with some dull, uneventful backtracking and predictable ambushes. Still, while not too challenging, there's just enough action to keep you interested. And, yay, a Doom 1 map! 3/5 -VV

Very good classical map that sort of generically outlines Doom - rocket launcher and plasma gun were there but I didn't need them, challenge was negligable, ammo and health plentiful and the overall feeling is a good one. 4* - Phobus

Yeah, a bit too easy: originally, Doom 1 was considered hard. And where are the archviles? :P I like archviles. Great map though.

My only gripe with this map is that the gameplay kinda declined after I got the red key. I kinda forgot where the other colored doors were so I kinda backtracked around the map until I found it. Maybe if you had added some extra monster closets in the middle of the map that were opened after picking up the red key, the monsters would have determined that I was moving in the right direction. Other than that the map was very well done. Very nice usage of DOOM.wad-only textures too.

A cool map for me, I enjoy with it but...the final battle just a little sucks, but I like the feel in there. Again, fighting 4 hell barons with shotgun is pain my ass, I know there is a secret area has plasma gun but...it still not a good idea for me. :p 4/5 -playerlin

The combination of base and outdoor theme made this map stand above the other E1 maps out there. It is always nice to have a sense of location by being inside and outside the base. Many Doom mappers make the mistake of having their entire map inside tight quarters. The game play was good, with many traps that kept me on my toes. The ending was too easy though, with the overabundance of plasma and rocket ammo. The start was much more of a challenge. Overall, an enjoyable map.

This was very good. Nice detailing and architecture. While not hard as shit, it is still challenging. It actually reminds me of the first couple of levels in Espi's "Suspended in Dusk". 5/5

Well, it is yet another typical DD style map of easy difficulty. So, well made but nothing we haven't seen many times before. If you feel like walking for about 10 minutes in a competently designed environment then this is for you.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
