Unlike the newstuff reviewer, I feel I wasted my time through this mess of backtracking. But it's not a HORRIBLE first level, so 2/5.

It's really good, but it has too many megaspheres. I liked it a lot.

As for the first wad released - a decent one. Some parts of it are really nice, some not so nice but for most part it's fun, although too much running from one side of the level to another. Overall 3/5.

Great job. It took me just under 30 mins on first attempt. I had a 1% moment just before finding a megasphere which was nice. Felt like Doom 2 and I enjoyed it so 4/5 from me.

It's fun but nothing spectacular. You can just run past the spider mastermind, and the blue switches involved a bit of boring backtracking. Seems more thought was put into the beginning than the end.

Fantastic map, excellent use of architecture and monsters to provide a constantly challenging and fun experience using a mere 180 monsters over fifteen minutes. If that's "1995" for you, more of this and less of modern maps, please. 5/5

Decent level with some good fights. At first I was kind of put off but later it picked up. Does getting to the lift before the the blue bars area (it goes up to a ledge where revenants and lost souls come out) really need strafe running? That seemed a bit annoying. The two bosses also felt pretty pointless, as they can't really do anything against you unless you're rather stupid. Other monsters were used pretty well, though. [3/5] ~Chain Mail (02/2011)

Not a bad map, but not a good map, either - it's pretty much right in the middle. It wasn't so bad that I quit it, but also not so good that I felt I'd spent my time well when I finished it. 2.5/5.

Phew! I had such a long time since I last played Doom and this is my first WAD to try (after facepalm). Maybe it's because I miss Doom, but I enjoyed this very much. It had a bit of backtracking and missaligned textures but cool fights and nice places to wonder around. 4/5 - Optimus

quite challenging map in robust 95' style, but finish part is disappointment. may be author should split this on two or three small, action-packed maps? ***+

Kind of a mixed bag, some of the fights were nice, but there's plenty of mapping mistakes around (especially texture misalignments). Some theme transitions were well done, others not so. The gameplay and flow is almost 4/5, but the overall sloppiness drops it to 3/5.

Boring architecture. Way too much backtracking. Seems like something from 1995. It might take 30 minutes but it's not much fun. 0/5

I feel your frustration and all that backtracking does get a little frustrating. But it isn't the worst level. It requires patience to pass. But its not a bad looking map, although there are obvious texture misalignments. It gets a 2.

I have patience, good! A classic feel map, some small flaws.(texture misalignments, boring backtracks on blue switches, etc) I like the fighting flow, it's perfect. Overall, a good map for classic players, but has some little flaws. 3.5/5 -playerlin

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
