Master Levels Menu Interface

About This File

The Master Levels Menu Interface is an ingame menu that serves to replace the old DOS program that would launch the chosen wad of the MASTER LEVELS FOR DOOM II. The Master Levels themselves ARE NOT INCLUDED in this package (they are a commercial release by id Software and must be purchased separately.)

Effectively, this file serves as a new frontend for the MASTER LEVELS, allowing you to play them in one sitting without restarting ZDoom. It also gives you a few extra options (keeping inventory between levels, varying the music so more than half the levels aren't playing D_RUNNIN, ...)

Detailed instructions for using this file are recorded below the upload template. Likewise, the PK3 itself contains an INSTRUCTIONS.txt file which is a duplicate of the same information. If you are not familiar with PK3's, it's just a Zip file and you can open it with any standarding archival tool that supports such (or rename it to ZDMLMENU.zip in Windows to browse it in Explorer.)

The scripts use to drive the menu system are in MenuLevelScripts.txt in the PK3, if you wish to use or study that as a basis for your own.

MasterLevelsLibrary.txt is the source script for the script library used in the menu interface (it is only tangentlly related to the menu scripting. It is mainly used for recording the player's progress which is why it is a script library and not level scripts.

very helpful! thanks a lot! 5/5 even better than merging all wads into a single wad, though I would have loved if the master levels came in a single wad.

Thanks for this. Very helpful for browsing and playing through the Master Levels. Frankly, I would like to be able to use something like this for certain MEGAWADs with no real cohesion from level to level, like Memento Mori or something, to easily browse the maps in-game. In any case, well done. 5/5

Sure it is good mod but Master Levels stinks anyways so who cares?

How utterly ridiculous. The Master Levels is just a bunch of separate pwads, and can be run in exactly the same way that any other pwads are. And anyone who plays Doom and doesn't know how to load pwads really needs to spend the few seconds it takes learning how to do so, or they'll be missing out on lots of good stuff.

If you have the Master Levels and want to play them in a decent way, use this with ZDoom. There is no alternative. It looks great and makes a bunch of wads make sense after all. 5/5 - NightFright

I should make a WAD to go with this that plays the correct PS1 Final Doom music and provides the skies... Cool stuff, Zip. 5/5 --Ceeb

Can't we just do the drag and drop way of running it? Or can you not do that and so you made an interface to do the same thing? It is no doubt useful, but I'm not exactly sure who would want to play all those mediocre to average maps in a row. It is also useful for those who want to make a level selector themselves like the doom95 setup screen. I'm not sure why you put a picture of Sparkster in the corner, though. 4/5

Guys, its just a little icon in the far lower-right corner...no need to go apeshit over it. Anyways, this utility is a pretty nifty tool for those of us who are wanting to play the master levels without too much hassle. Definitely worth the download.

For some reason I prefer more the way you rename all maps lumps to their wad name rather than creating a second TEETH2.WAD. I mean it was a bit confusing, it didn't mention about the lump TAGDESC, whenever I had to keep only in TEETH2 or to have in both TEETH wads (not that it affected gameplay). Anyway, this mod still gets 5 stars as it made possible playing Master Levels on ZDoom, much better than merging them into a megawad!

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
