About This File

READ THIS FIRST!!!

First off, ZDoom/GZDoom is REQUIRED to play this level. The wad contains features that currently are only supported by ZDoom/GZDoom. Also, this level was NOT designed for jumping, crouching, or freelook. Using these features will ruin the flow and feel of the level, so please don't use them.

This wad is a replacement for Map 01 of DOOM2, and is my attempt at a Plutonia-style level. Expect a very challenging adventure with some nasty battles and rather unfair ambushes, all in the spirit of The Plutonia Experiment. By far the hardest level I've created.

I think this is up there with Bastion and the later levels of FTH for Stormwalker's best work. Maybe a runner up mention to Test Lab #13 as well, though. Recommended.

Solid level; the difficulty ramps up considerably as you go through it, although it starts to feel a little kitchen sink at the end. Watch out for the evil puffball.

I dunno about the previous reviewer, but I liked it alot. This level could have been included in PLUTONIA.wad and it wouldnt have been out of place. This ones going in my "play again" folder. 5/5 -Rocketjumper

Good map, but I don't really like the map, the last area just let me feel boring...well, it still have fun until that. :p -playerlin 4/5

Resembles Plutonia only in some visual setpieces, not so much in gameplay. There are a few tricky moments, but nothing a seasoned player couldn't handle (two bfg secrets...). Monster usage is really ineffective at times, i.e. the only cyberdemon in the huge final area is even confined to a small ledge, and the "unfair" ambushes are predictable. Lots of effort has been put into making the map look nice though. Oh, and watch out for the evil puffball. Rounded up 4/5

Really enJoyable. I played it quick coz the design accommodated it. I think the elevator at the start should be switch controlled from both sides coz I blew myself with the RL when I accidentally stepped back too far when fighting the revenants. The description made it seem more challenging than it actually was. At any rate, I was really impressed. Thanks.

Average. The architecture doesn't quite fit in with the theme of Plutonia, and the gameplay certainly does not. Nothing special here, but at least it was good enough to warrant a few minutes of time. 3/5

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
