About This File

HACX is an action filled DOOM Engine game. The story is set in the near future, where you'll find yourself engrossed in an international blastfest. Wield weapons of mass destruction from China to Paris to combat a devilish artificial intelligence and its hordes of loyal fanatics. Can you handle it, hacker?

This release is a stand-alone IWAD that does not require DOOM II to run, and is compatible with many popular ports. Release also includes several minor map fixes since v1.1 (making levels fully co-op compatible) and other miscellaneous tweaks.

HACX.WAD can be run either as an IWAD with ZDoom and Eternity or as a PWAD alongside DOOM II using other ports like Chocolate Doom and PRBoom.

For the most part, a solid IWAD to have in your Doom library. Some of the levels do show off some impressive atmosphere and visuals, showing off the world of Hacx with a Cyberpunk theme infested of some nasty monsters and robots. The weapons, while nothing too spectacular, look and sound cool, with the pistol and Uzi being great fun to use. A shame that the last 4-5 levels aren't really good and are obviously rushed out (you can finish MAP16 in less than 1 second) given the game's development history. Still, an interesting IWAD with a style and backstory that holds up a strong identity for the game. I hope to see 2.0 give Hacx the long-awaited vision and execution it needs.

The levels in the middle of the game are truly awesome. I like to replay them from time to time. Looking forward to 2.0.

Originally a commercial addon, this was leater rereleased as freeware. Unfortunately it's lacking the final levels as it was never really finished. Aged extremely well and comes with all changed graphics and sounds, making for a game feeling very different from Doom (except the shooting itself, of course). Can be played as a standalone IWAD, so why are you still reading this?

An add-on. Now an IWAD. It is that good. While the levels are EXTREMELY complex, even for MAP01, just makes the whole thing more unique. The ugly pistol weilding thugs, the robotic shotgun, the fat rocket launcher AND chaingunner and so on. The challenge is pretty sweet. 5/5

Obviously a LOT of effort went into this and it shows, if this was released 10 years ago you'd be picked up by a professional publisher in no time but even then it's a great effort. I got stuck in a room, don't know if this was intended or a bug I also dislike the Ghetto handling of the Uzi LOL. Well done overall! I'll definitely give it another shot.

Hacx is an *okay* game, it's good AND bad. Sprites and weapon concepts are nice but the enemies are annoying and the level layout is boring. -Mikk

An excellent (now-free) 'independent' game from the late 1990s. HACX2 is shaping to be an even better experience.

I guess it starts okay, but the levels get boring and redundant, and the enemies aren't really all that hard and/or interesting. Feels like the designer got bored halfway through and started recycling the levels with minor changes. It shows effort, but feels incomplete and unsubstantial.

I really hope they continue making 2.0 in the future, I really enjoyed this game, I know it's 2013 but this game hasn't lost it's charm.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
