About This File

Updated version, now fully vanilla compatible. Some major and minor changes in most levels, most noticeable in E2M2. First released 7/10/10, DDVU is a nine-level replacement for Ultimate Doom's episode two. This wad set aims to keep the spirit and style of the old Shores of Hell similar, while keeping things fresh with new places, ideas and increased difficulty. Coop and deathmatch are supported with spawns and multiplayer weapons, but DM is untested.

it's alright I guess.

^It was part of (perhaps even primarily) the goal of the whole wad! Slight Return and even Wonderful Doom are considerably worse in this regard, anyways. This is what a GOOD yet still reasonably faithful remake should be like.

One star down for blatant IWAD references in each map. You know, it's not so fun to see the same old designs being repeated in new maps, again and again. And in this wad, it's not just homages - it's also the progression, puzzles, ambushes, and whole rooms and layouts being too closely imitating Doom's E2 - actually, the entirety of Doom's E2. Other than that, though, it's a nice classic-style mapset. 4/5.

Another underdog, much like Styx (which I reviewed yesterday) only released about a year later to a year and a half later and for E2 this time. The maps are all based off the originals, but there are plenty of changes that it doesn't get in the danger zone of feeling like you're just playing the same episode again, better than Wonderful Doom or Slight Return for instance. It's also better balance for pistol start than Styx. Sneak a 5/5, maybe I'll try to find more of the underdogs too.

DDVU is probably the closest example to what ID would do if Ep2 were recreated a few years later. The game play is well balanced and presents a very fair challenge. Architecture is no better than maps made in the late 90s, but the textures are well chosen and aligned (something I always notice). My only complaints are the maze-like design of a few maps, and E2M8 being too close to the original. E2M9 was also kind of a let down. Definitely worth a play though!

This does a lot better than Slight Return in remembering the original E2, but also giving the player a new experience. It's a lot more like Phobos Revisited was to E1, in that you can recognize a vast majority of the areas as being takes on the originals, but you cannot just recall what you did in the original and expect it (or something very similar) to work here. A very good job.

Pretty cool episode. Very much like the originals in theme, but different enough in their layouts to feel like a whole new episode. While its not on the same level as the best episode replacements (CH_Retro, b2b, etc), it'll still provide some good fun. 4/5 -Snakes

This is an awesome episode. For the most part it really feels like you're playing TSOH for the first time again. If you loved that episode you can't afford to miss this. A cacoward contender. -MegaDoomer, playtester

The only thing that stops me from giving this a 5 is that it uses the Shores of Hell levels as a base. That means EACH LEVEL is directly based off of the corresponding E2 level. The author is clearly a very creative person and the levels were a blast to play, I just wish he had come up with something entirely new that had a Shores of Hell feel. 4/5.

Wow, two E2 style wad sitting in latest files at the same time! This one is actually a rerelease, but it's vanilla compatible and E2 has been improved IMO (crate section bigger and not almost totally skippable). -MegaDoomer, playtester. Unbiased 5/5

This is dated July 2010. It's a kind of remix of E2, broadly similar, although it's much more spread-out (E2M8 being the only exception), and feels less atmospheric because of it. Design is vintage 1994. None of the levels are better than the originals - E2M2 is a terrible disappointment, E2M9 a disaster - and although the monster count has been greatly increased the difficulty level is the same, so it gets very monotonous very quickly.

As a remake it's quite good. And I never get bored of classic remakes especially when they are so interesting designed. 5/5 - Optimus

Fifth review on here is way off. This is a very solid episode of if it was E2 itself I would've been more than happy. My only complaint is the crate area on E2M2 can practically be skipped entirely.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
