Darkening Episode 2 Texture Wad

About This File

When we released the Darkening Episode 2 waaaaay back, we sorta promised a standalone texture wad so you could create your own Darkening E2 Levels. For various reasons we never got around to releasing this texture wad, but by popular demand, here it finally is.

The only change between this release and the 2011 release, is that I've gotten in touch with Ola and obtained his approval to relax the permissions. It is now allowed to incorporate these textures in other projects, all we ask is that, in the spirit of good manners, credit is given to the Darkening E2 team.

I hope that this resolves any issues anyone had with the initial release.

@comment above: that's not the point, of course you can always rip whatever you damn well please. The thing is, now there is a *correct* way of using these textures, so you really don't have an excuse to rip them anymore. - Jan

It's about damn time! Anyway, even by 2000, there were plenty of wad editing programs that we could use to rip the textures out and so this is basically useless. The textures are nice though.

I agree with the first guy's comment. Darken2 is great but the distribution conditions of this pack are lame. You can already use darken2.wad as a resource WAD with -file darken2 mywad. I personally don't condone ripping and won't use this WAD myself in a project, but this has about the same flaw as the level set if you want to use the textures, and should pretty much incite the same rationalizations for ripping select resources from some people wanting select textures from the set.

I'm a bit surprised at all the hate this release is getting. I know the textures have been copied to death, and personally I don't care all that much, but I'm not Ola so I can't change the terms and conditions as he is the legitimate copyright holder of 90% of the textures in this wad. Even so, before this release there was no way to legitimately use these textures for a level and now there is, so it's a net gain for everyone. - Jan

Jan: In 2001 the Darken2 site stated that authors could use the textures as long as credit was given. It doesn't get much more legitimate than that. The backlash is due to the usage rights changing a decade later: authors were allowed to freely use them before, but now they're more restricted. Lots of wads used them under the original rule, but I haven't seen a single wad requiring dark2tex.zip as a separate addon; they'd probably have gotten more use otherwise.

@the unknown poster above: that post on the de2 website was by Anthony, who is not the author of any of the textures... Ola always felt strongly about not having his textures ripped. Fortunately though, I managed to get in contact with Ola, and he agreed with me on relaxing the permissions. A zip with a new txt is being uploaded, and as of now, you will be allowed to use these textures in other projects, provided that some credit is given, as a matter of good manners. - Jan

I Don't understand the description, can I use this texture as a base for new levels or not?

Make our own Darkening E2 levels but not being able to use them? I guess you want them all to be labeled "Darkening E2 extra fan levels." Seriously? We can't use it for anything but? Bullshit. Don't upload it then.

and what exactly is the point of making users "refer to this file as a requisite" rather than being allowed to incorporate the textures into their own wad? darken2 textures are well known and easy to recognize; nobody would be stupid enough to try to "steal" them. it's also just an unnecessary nuisance to make the user download two files when it could just as easily be one.

There is no way for an average player to tell if a level author used the textures from this wad in his level or just ripped them from the original Darken2 if the he doesn't say so, so this wad is a moot point. Besides, how many people have actually downloaded this wad instead of the wad that these textures are from anyway? 2/5

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
