About This File

The map has no linear design, and it's ubicated in a decadent place. You must activate lots of swich if you want arrive at the end. The map is harder than you may think at the begining.

The level is nice to look at without being too detailed, although the entire level is a bit too brown, and as a result most areas look the same, making this confusing map that much harder to navigate. The monsters are used fairly well. The major problem is the author's switch hunt idea, which he went overboard on. It requires too much backtracking for the average player, and thus most will lose interest halfway through. Still, this author has promise - 3/5.

Haven't finished it yet though I got pretty far, but while it's not bad it would be better if the beginning weren't so tedious with the switches and the low-powered fighting. The overly brown environment enhances the dullness a bit. Later it picks up, but the earlier dullness kind of asks for using saves to avoid it, which is bad. [3/5] ~Chain Mail (06/2012)

While I admire the design and liked the dark brown/iron theme, I found it quite frustrating. It takes non-linearity to the extreme. A lot of yellow/red/blue doors scattered around as also switches to press and something else opens somewhere else. Pitty because I like the architecture. 3.5/5 - Optimus

Feel boring easily because switch/keycard hunting and confusing about "WTF should I going?" problem. The map design isn't bad at all. I was want to give up about first 5 min. but after I found blue key it's not bad... then after yellow key and I stuck the outside of the room that have switch to trigger the two spiderdemons battle...shit happens...,so I just noclip for rest of level and exit, sorry. 3/5 -playerlin

I thought it was very good, the switches are fun in a "memory test" sort of way.

I first thought that this was too much of a switch hunt (I hate those), but in actuality, it wasn't so bad; they were all pretty easy to find, and I never really got lost. I'd give this a 4/5, but there's a huge HOM issue (in GZDoom, anyway) in the small area northeast of the "yellow courtyard"; I'm not sure what's up with that, but unless it's a bug in GZDoom (which I doubt), it's quite distracting. As such, only 3/5. - ZZ

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
