About This File

Another rejected map from the "Doom: the way ID did" project, this level replace e2m9...

Anyway, the aim of this level is joining the e2 official style with the earlier Alpha layouts choice of mr. Tom Hall

Cool map. The chaingun should have came availible earlier imo. The two small rooms near the red key are tagged as a secret, which I found to be unnecessary. I missed the souldsphere secret. Probably your best map so far. 4/5 DD

Decent oldschoolish map. Design is a bit jumbled, as expected from Daimon, but not bad. Quite a few secrets. 3.5/5 - ZZ

The map is not so bad, but it gave me an impression of randomness in both texturing (like to many Hall levels in one) and progression. The teleporters didn't help in the latter respect. Spacing was not that great either, and it felt somewhat cramped in places, bigger areas notwithstanding. The outside dark area also seemed a bit artificial. To the inbred hick flailing about in an attempt to correct the first guy's spelling, get yourself a half decent dictionary (as an education would be too much to ask.)

Random mashup from various mostly recognizeable areas of the second episode. Secrets are not obvious but very intuitive and half of them are known from E2. Gameplay is OK but it is more E1 style than E2 style because there are almost no hard mosters (two or three cacodemons and a lone baron) and cool weapons (you only get shotgun at the start and a chaingun at the end). It's not bad but there are reasons why it was rejected. 3/5 P.S. Did you notice that body hanging in the air in the dark outside area?

4/5 Really like it - a little bit confusing. The different visual themes are great.

It's a decent map, where everything seems to work correctly, and Petersen has even been spelt correctly. Neither of those ought to be worth mentioning, except that they so often do not apply. The map is a bit overammoed (health is pretty much OK), and short on life-threatening traps, and some wall-humping or good guesswork is needed to find all the secrets. But overall OK.

Good map Walter. Probably your best work to date. A nice oldschool 1994 style map. 4 out of 5 for me.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
