About This File

12 Boom format levels for PrBoom+, ZDoom, or Eternity. A bonus 13th level is included for laughs. Inspired by Speed of Doom, Scythe 2, Alien Vendetta, and Plutonia.

Originally Vanguard was intended to be a 32-level speedmapped megawad inspired by Speed of Doom's development cycle and Scythe 2's episodic structure.

This is about as close to a perfect release as they come. Doomworld needs a 6-star rating because Lunatic is easily 5 stars in my view yet even that can hardly compare to this. 5(6)/5 - MegaDoomer

A most excellent map set indeed. Thoroughly recommended. The only shame is that there aren't 32 maps here. 5/5 dwrTag

A perfect pack. Provided so many hours of survival fun when I chose this for ZD TNS. Defintiely one of my best doom experiences.

my god, the last review I did for this was toxic as fuck. anyways, Vanguard is a fairly strong set that, according to what I'm seeing here, has managed to garner a boatload of attention. and playing it shows why, it's how modern maps honestly should be made, harder than the original IWADs, themed episodically, and fun on the whole. while there are some hiccups, like I'm not keen on the Tyson map or MAP07, and slaughtermap haters will hate the end-of-episode levels, the fun factor remains consistent throughout. it's challenging to plow through, but it's the right kind of challenge, and that's why it's a great wad.

This WAD is a fantastic achievement and another reason to become a fan of Skillsaw. Truly challenging, varied, attractive and eminently playable maps with an extremely high level of polish. Absolutely essential.

A fantastic map set - lots of fun with a nicely ramping difficulty progression. Sublime visuals and a nice episodic structure combine with the music, theming, shorter map set and solid gameplay to produce a distilled megawad, in effect. I rather enjoyed the bonus MAP13 too! 5* -Phobus

As a map pack, it's pretty damn good, the maps are wonderful, filled with well places monsters and puzzles, interesting level design and the music makes it even better, A must play

Overall good architecture, great decoration, mostly very nice ambiance. But then: gameplay @ UV starts slow, gets much better, then sadly turns into slaughtermap, with map10 reaching the lower limit with plain hopelessly monster placement. Overall: 5 for the maps and 3 for the gameplay makes 4/5, so very good but far from legendary because of the gameplay.

Amazing! Can't stop playing it! It's hard, but not impossible (like some wads I could mention). One of the best pwads I've ever played. Get it now!

I don't know how I haven't rated this wad yet, but better late than never. Map02 is an example of THE perfect Doom map in my eyes - it's length, difficulty, and nonlinear design mesh incredibly well with the theme and music to create a lush, playable experience that changes ever-so-slightly every time you replay it. Needless to say, the wad as a whole ranks as one of my all-time favorites and is completely worth the download. 5/5 for sure -Snakes

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
