About This File

A Hell-themed map that I originally created for a community megawad project. That project fell flat on its face, so I decided to keep the map as a stand-alone experience. This was the very first time I'd worked exclusively with this theme, so it was both challenging and a great learning experience. I believe this is one of my best maps yet, with non-linear gameplay and well-balanced difficulty.

Hell yeah! Good map and that means a lot coming from someone who doesn't like hell-themed maps. Good ammo/stimpacks placement, you need to manage your ressources efficiently.

Good: the foggy maze, the rocky maze with barons of hell and hell knights

Honorable mention: the floating library in the lava

Bad: the starting zone made me want to gouge my eyes out

Not too hard and still challenging. Played on hurt me plenty. It's a four stars for me.

Stays true to that classic feel. Zdoom effects used well and sparingly such that you barely notice it. Game play is fun and simple. I also like the non linearity of it to, although at times it goes to far with the constant use of literal mazes. 4/5 FoH

What? 4 stars? Damns, my feets hurts from running over all the lavas, and the layout is pretty pedestrian. It's not terrible, and it's a fun little map to play once, but hell, classic or above average means replay value, and this map ain't got that.

A barely average map, with dull gameplay, some flaws (such as "monsters can't cross" lines in open space) and a few annoying Zdoom features thrown in, including "stealth" monsters. The vaunted non-linearity is of a trivial type, and not sufficient to make the map behave play significantly differently depending on what decisions the player makes.

4 stars, would b 5 if the last 2 enemies were a bigger threat than just imps, otherwise cacos, archie, imps, knights, barons, mancubus all make this a great wad

Invisible demons sucks, gameplay barely OK, detail just like plain id's maps but with ZDooM features on it. 3/5 -playerlin

I doubt it's "barely average" given the comment the author has received on his YouTube channel.

I really like the appearance of this map. Most maps are either horribly lackluster, or a clusterfuck of textures (what some call "detail"). The one gripe I had is that it's really easy to get lost and keep looping around the same areas, however I like the fact that you have to explore, so it's not a bad thing entirely. It's a slim 4 for me. I'd like to work with the author, I'm a fan of 'classic style' mapping.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
