About This File

A set of 4 maps using Quake textures. The maps are small to medium in size, and gameplay gradually gets harder as you progress. The maps are pretty detailed and have a good amount of interesting architecture. My goal was to make small-ish maps with gameplay that wasn't going to get brutally hard. At first I wasn't expecting to do more than one or two maps with these textures, but I had enough ideas and motivation to sqeeze out a few more maps. And it turned out to be a nice enough set of maps. I'm not planning to make more maps with these textures, but I might do a sequel with Quake 2 textures in the future.

My go-to map pack for warming up in Doom. Try playing with Complex Doom for more intense action against insurmountable odds. My favorite all-time Dutch Devil release. I hope that real life gives him time to relax in order to create more fun adventures!

A nice set of medium sized maps that gradually build in difficulty. A short and sweet episode, just how I like them. Health in map 4 seemed to be just a little low for the amount of hitscanners around, and the lavafall textures in that map probably would have looked a better if they were animated. Those are my only nitpicks though, and the I still think the pack is very well made. 5/5 -Lupinx-Kassman

I have fun with those maps, looking so great! Just feels like DooMed Quake or something like that. But the key door texture choice sometimes misleading me, because I noticed the blue door texture in Map04 was just for a switch mark in Map03. I like it's not so hard in UV, hitscanner just annoying but not ruined. 4/5 -playerlin

Lovely maps that look great and play well. The outside/underground area in map 4 in particular is beautiful. Definitely recommended. 5/5 - ZZ

Stunning use of the Quake textures DD. Contrary to some previous comments, I thought a lot of it was spectacular. Rock solid game play and eye candy architecture make this a perfect wad in my eyes. 5/5 -FoH

I really enjoyed playing through that mapset, but there wasn't any strong moment. I really like your architecture and details. The gameplay was good and easy. 4/5 - Damned

I agree with previous rewiever. Beautiful design, nice Quake atmosphere, but too easy gameplay. It's funny, but not challenging. 4/5. If you do the second part with Quake 2 textures, more difficult please, and you'll get a masterpiece.

A Masterpiece! Excellent usage of Quake 1 Textures, really great architecture and atmosphere. Amazing gameplay, but too easy. The only bad thing about this .wad: It's over too fast. But yeah, 5/5 -unidenti7ied

A short but sweet offering from Dutch Devil. The more atmospheric tracks from Evilution complement the grungy Quake visuals and the gameplay seemed just right to me on UV. Starts off easy and quickly ramps upto a moderate challenge where death is a possibility, but unlikely. 5* -Phobus

Four medium-sized maps which would fit excellently in the "Darkening" series. The gameplay is good, with moderately challenging fights, some nice traps, and one or two clever secrets. Similar texturing, layout and progression ideas are used throughout. A solid piece of work, which I doubt will leave anyone disappointed. Recommended. --4/5

Pretty good. Great textures and graphics. Game play will be enjoyable to mid-level players. HR-level have a look and then move on.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
