JENESIS

About This File

The third and final part of my solo megawad. Part 3 of 'Jenesis' adds 12 extra maps to the first twenty (which have all also been modified for the better in some way or another) and replaces the final map, as its predecessor did.

'Jenesis' is a 32-level megawad for Boom, complete with a new final boss, a new monster, new status bar graphics and a recolored message font.

The aim of this project was mainly to hone my skills in traditional Doom level design, but it was also to create a presentable set of maps which pulled inspiration from the great megawads like the Memento Mori duology, Hell Revealed, Alien Vendetta, Requiem and Scythe. These are just some of the mapsets out there that Jenesis pays homage to, thematically.

This is the megawad's final release. In total it has taken about one year and one month of hard mapping, bugtesting and procrastination to complete. :P

Good fun for a great round of multiplayer survival mode on ZDaemon or Skulltag. The maps are at that sweet spot where they are not too complex/detailed or too small/ugly. 4/5

Awesome, lots of good fun here with some frustrating moments (namely arch-viles out in the open) but all in good fun. ~vf

Outstanding. I can't believe that most of these were speedmaps; they're great, look nice and play well. Highly recommended. 5/5 - ZZ

Well... it's a nice wad, among the better ones that came out in the past few years, but... seriously, just stop with the goddamn revenants already! Why can't there be just one wad that doesn't unleash armies of revenants on the player as early as the first few levels?! For that, it's only a 4/5. Anyway, the highway level and the one with the molten gold rivers (MAP15 I believe) were absolutely stunning.

Worth no less than 5 stars. 32 fun maps and some nice new music, an excellent megawad by a great guy in James. Just letting you know that there is a mistake in the .txt file and that I wrote the music used in MAP20. -Pcorf

Clean, but surely too clean... there is not the "special" thing which makes you want to see more, to get 100% kills or 100% of the secrets. Architecture is detailed but has nothing remarquable. All in all, a decent set of maps, but very far from the best wads I've played, even if the author seems to have worked kinda hard !

An all around excellent product with lots of "tough but fun" maps and only very few unpleasant levels (23, 25 and ESPECIALLY 30; I'm looking at all of you). Great classic design and enemy placements, little flagrant "gotchas" and good flow add up to something worthwhile.

Really superb megawad, one of the few newer megawads I actually finished. Maps are neither confusingly big nor too small, gameplay is hard but never cheap. There are no new or modified monsters with the exception of two boss fights at the end, so I recon this is a pretty good fit for playing with Brutal Doom.

Top quality! Exactly the right size of maps, exactly proper level of details, exactly right balanced gameplay. There were just 2 spots on this perfect megawad. Firsly, in lot of levels, you have to go through whole map to get the key and then back to open the door. Fortunately maps aren't too big and I played it in Zdoom with locked doors visible in automap. Secondly in some maps are too many ammo and medkits. But no doubt 5/5 - Damned

Possibly my favourite one man megawad ever. Many hours of solid gameplay, nice visuals and good BGM to keep you happy and enough of a challenge to keep you engaged. This finished project is definitely worth playing 5* -Phobus

in this day and age, Jenesis would probably be seen as average. but to remind everyone, average does not mean bad. there's barely anything that can really be considered "bad" in any of Jimmy's work, even across 32 whole levels of this. design works well, gameplay does not get unfair, and level size is properly accomodated. it really feels like a true classic megawad, not full on gimmicks, slaughter, or any of that. the first level is probably slow and MAP28's Icon of Sin part is annoying, but there's nothing that really falls below the mark of good.

Too many forgettable maps because I played it some time ago and I can only remember 4 or 5 maps. Maybe most of it is just too similar. A shame really, coz I had a good time playing through this mapset. Nothing too spectacular though.

I really like it. The architecture is often simple and square, but the monster and item placement really take advantage of the environment. A lot of fun! 5/5

Tough levels, both play-wise and in design. Created by a mapper with skills and a good sense of the balance between modern fun and old-school dooming mayhem. Doesn't try and blow you away visually, just solidly keeps the thrills and surprises to keep you constantly on your toes. 5/5

4/5 Cool megawad. The architecture is probably too bare at times, yet again those are mostly speedmaps. Keep making maps Jimmy, I think this is your best release as of yet.

Of any 'basic' megawad from 2011 I think this is probably the best. It has a couple of catches like its competitor Reverie (different ones though) but shines just a bit brighter IMO. They don't really hurt the play IMO except if they happen to be things you just can't stand which is personal preference. If you can look past that this is a great almost vanilla megawad needing only a slight limit remover. It's all quite a well rounded and fun product I can easily recommend. 4.75/5 = 5/5

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
