JENESIS

About This File

The third and final part of my solo megawad. Part 3 of 'Jenesis' adds 12 extra maps to the first twenty (which have all also been modified for the better in some way or another) and replaces the final map, as its predecessor did.

'Jenesis' is a 32-level megawad for Boom, complete with a new final boss, a new monster, new status bar graphics and a recolored message font.

The aim of this project was mainly to hone my skills in traditional Doom level design, but it was also to create a presentable set of maps which pulled inspiration from the great megawads like the Memento Mori duology, Hell Revealed, Alien Vendetta, Requiem and Scythe. These are just some of the mapsets out there that Jenesis pays homage to, thematically.

This is the megawad's final release. In total it has taken about one year and one month of hard mapping, bugtesting and procrastination to complete. :P

Really damn cool stuff. Barring the occasional awful Baron, and one or 2 questionable uses of key markers, I don't think I had any complaints. 5 stars for a top-quality WAD.

Wow, the megawad was released 1 day after my 16th birthday (which was 1 year and half ago). Anyway on a more serious note, this is an excellent megawad and was done by one and ONLY one man and that's Jimmy! It combines themes from various older classic megwads which makes an exceptional level designer! Too bad it requires a Boom-themed source port, I wanted to play this on Chocolate Doom! Still I give 5/5! -Doomer95

4/5 Stars. Too much use of Revenants in earlier levels. Been playing this on normal, but it sucks getting chased around by 3 or 5 of those seeker missles constantly. Other then that, the 4 stars stands for this true Doom Two map set! Thank you!

Good maps. Just a word to budding designers. If you think it's "fun" to make a dozen pain elementals appear simultaneously around the perimeters of the map and begin barfing up 100s of flaming skull things - a) I lose all interest in playing and, b) I have no guilt about going into god mode and maxing out on rockets with the foolish optimism that the next level won't be so GODDAMN STUPID. Just DON'T DO IT. Sheesh.

Easily in the top 5 projects so far this year - if part 3 makes it then a for sure cacoward. Some maps are harder than others and the difficulty curve may be a wee bit too low for the truely experienced player, but by no menas in that enough to impede a full 5 stars.

Quite possibly the best megawad 2011 had to offer. Doesn't look like a speedmapping effort at all. You get 32 maps with continuity, awesome design and enjoyable gameplay. The music actually rocks, too (try with EAWPats)! Note that there is a fix available adressing many map bugs (http://jimmy.phenom er.net/wad-files/jen efix.wad). Eventually, a new release should be uploaded. Anyway, you need to play this or you are missing an awesome Doom experience. 5/5 - NightFright

OK, again...those early new maps still very good and I have fun... the later new maps still falling to Map09-11 in part 1, except Map20, it looking funny so I like it(but not so much)... 5 new musics sounds very good too, nice work. 4.5/5, minus half point for some boring designs. :p -playerlin

Great level design. But the huge amount of revenants ruined it for me. It just made it way too frustrating and not fun anymore by the end.

Thank you very much for this WAD, it was challenging and enjoyable without going over the top with special effects. 5 stars, hands down.

High quality design, but nothing really spectacular. Most maps are too linear and there is no surprising moments. It is just okay, nothing special. This wad is similar to Simplicity, but not so stylish. 3 stars from me.

Very good stuff. All maps flow really good, and there are alot of different and cool ideas throughout the maps. I dont know exactly what it is..I just cant put my finger on it, but I can`t give this a 5*, so 4* it is. Great work.

Excellent! Fun from start to finish, and manages to be genuinely challenging without reliance on insanely high monster counts.

There's good variety in the design of all levels - I liked the cavern / outdoor area / hell ones most, since the so-called 'techbase' theme is getting more and more uninteresting in general for me. The peculiar design of the final (boss) levels is really appreciable, although including some hint about their solution would have been nice. Good job!

It's beautiful, but imbalanced. 50 rockets and a shitload of plasma around for nothing more than few mancubuses and hellknights? It's an usual situation for the middle of the wad. On another hand, to max secret maps you should care about every bullet you've shot. And yet there's more funny things, like monsters stucking in each other at the icon of sin battle in map29 or inescapable areas throughout the wad. With more playtesting it could have been spectacular wad. 3/5.

An excellent one-man megawad that very much deserves the cacoward it got. The levels showcase some really creative ideas and are a joy to play, and the music is top-notch as well. 5/5 -Stormwalker

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
