Deimos: Slight Return

About This File

Nine maps that attempt to capture the look and feel of the original Episode 2. While the influence of the original E1 maps is unmistakable, the player will note some significant differences. First, the gameplay is markedly different. While using only the enemies in E2, Deimos: Slight Return is meant to be tougher and more challenging -- more enemies in tighter situations; better balanced ammo, health, & armor; and better use of the tougher enemies.

Second, the map layouts are often very different from the originals. The logical progression has changed, as have many of the methods of accessing the secrets. I have done this while trying to retain the appearance and scale of the original, so that the player has a sense of deja vu. I emphasize that each map is built from scratch, with the originals only used for reference.

Third, the architecture is updated to current standards while staying within the limits of vanilla DooM. For, although players will undoubtedly use source ports, these levels are ultimately meant to be enjoyed first with vanilla DooM.

Fourth, the original E2 did not use editing tricks that are not uncommon in today's maps -- instantly lowering sectors, 3D bridges, etc. Phobos Revisited occasionally does.

What's here is solid. Is this WAD revolutionary? No. Does it need to be? No.

It certainly is a decent romp - and a worthwhile episode - it didn't blow my socks off, but I enjoyed nearly every moment of it. Geometry is nice, too!

A good solid time from beginning to end - don't expect to see anything too out of the ordinary, though.

I can echo what Doomkid said about the other reviews... odd that this WAD has received such negative reception - it most definitely doesn't deserve it.

[4/5]

Based on some of the reviews you'd think that wad murdered the reviewer's firstborn. It's just E2 but with more elegant architecture - useful for those moments where you're like "I want to replay Doom again, but I don't want to replay Doom again" if you know what I mean. Fails in originality I suppose, but is still above average architecturally and certainly undeserving of some of the sour reviews.

Worthless wad, author fails in all aspects. To close resemblance of the original basic layouts; gameplay design is below average even on primitive-hardcore e2m8; -fastmonsters almost impossible; architecture and texturing often seems out of the place.

Similar to original with a few twists and tougher gameplay. Not bad.

Sorry, but imho this megawad does not have significant additional gameplay value to make a play worth its time - which is the main reason for building variations on the original maps. If you do such a thing, then do it good, not half. 2/5 for the efford

The layouts are very nearly exact clones of the original e2 maps, with the additions mostly consisting of lots of garish color combinations and some rather ugly and inconsistent detail. ReX's earlier wad in this series, Phobos Revisited, seemed a bit more inspired in its reappropriation of the original maps, though with this as a comparison that isn't saying very much. I don't think there's much reason to download this instead of just loading up The Shores of Hell; it's very nearly the same experience.

I was quite disappointed - it seems like.the author.just took E2 and adapted his architectural style to it. Gameplay and progression are far too similar. I expected a lot better as I felt its E1 counterpart hit the nail in the head comparatively. I look forward to Red's current E3 wad in progress, but with caution. I hope it's very different from this virtual imitation.

After having a fairly solid time with Phobos Revisited - this was a big dissapointment. Sorry but PR actually had some effort in changing the levels around some - this is 90% match as far as layouts are concerned, and not far from that in progression at time either. I have to recommend Deimos Deja Vu, any E2 style episode, or even just replaying the original TSOH over this by far.

maybe too similar to the original levels, but it has work on it and the detailing has good taste. 4 stars

Slight return? I'd say total return. It's basically E2 copy-pasted with the architecture and room design modified to fit Rex's style. Phobos Revisited (NOT Directive, however) was much better than this. 1/5 since it at least has competent designs, original or not.

I would say this fails on every discernible level - especially on the second and third points mentioned in the .txt (layouts very different, architecture to current standards). These maps feel like curved replicas of the originals with random, ugly detail added... most likely in the form of a + on the ceiling. Fairly lame, all in all.

A fun set of maps. Episode 2, just tougher. Deja vu all over again.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
