About This File

Doom has turned 18, but an evil armada of balloons is trying to cut the maturing success story short and have possessed Doomguy himself. Now it's up to you to light the holy purifying birthday candles of salvation and take out the balloon witches before we lose our hero to the dark side permanently.

Great idea, but sometimes your movement freezes by what at first seems the balloons atacking you but then it happened without a ballon. I finished it with invulterability. 3/5 - Optimus

Interesting idea, not a huge lot of fun in practice. 1.5/5 - ZZ

An impressive technical and visual feat. I played on zdoom (even though i wasn't supposed to) and it ran more or less ok. Its really eerie yet retro. As a mapper, it had me scratching my head as to how this was done with nothing more than DeHackED. Very nice! 5/5 -FoH

It's too hard when you don't have any health items...well, nice idea, but too bad it just HARD. I just feel it's boring and then use "kill monsters" and see those stupid evil balloons go BOOM! Lovin' it. But after that, it just a failed design...and ruined the cool idea. :( 2/5

It's quite hard. I would have liked it much more if there was health (maybe you could eat some cake or something). But otherwise I liked it, 4stars.

This is dated December 2011. Just like in my dream, bright red normal-sized biting killer balloons stream from the Doomguy's head whilst you run around trying to light all the candles on a cake. And then a big balloon attacks you with fire. I hate it when that happens. You're just getting to sleep and, bang, a big balloon attacks you with fire. The level is very hard - no health - and not much fun to play, although I'm glad that I saw it.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
