One of best megawads I've ever played. This one has it all: huge maps, high monster count in every map, epic fights and the most important aspect for me, the gameplay is excellent: only 2 maps I found a bit confuse (namely map 22 and 26), all the others were fine. Recommended!

Congratulations! I was waiting impaciently for this one to be released and here it is, finally a high quality 32-map megawad in 2012! I'm at map07 right now and, for me, it has already won a Cacoward, 4/5 -MarkAnthony

In general, I hate slaughter maps that contain hundreds of monsters in open space because are very hard but I think I can do this one without cheating. 4/5

It's hardly perfect--there are some instances of crass repetition/copypaste in a few places, and some odd item placement at times, but it's fun, with some freespirited gameplay ideas that call to mind popular 90s (mega)WADs better than a number of recent releases actively aiming for that impression. Fans of the those, or of recent classic-style hits like Reverie/DooM Core, should enjoy this, though it's worth noting that it becomes FAR bloodier than any of the aforesaid when it hits its stride. --TDotW

It could be at least runner up in Cacowards. I liked it.

an odd community wad from the Czechs, this one contains plenty of huge maps, which can be a turnoff. jaeden's maps in particular are really fucking huge and sometimes insane in combat. MAP24 and MAP30 were the biggest and most epic, but I got lost a lot in MAP22 and MAP26 (all by jaeden). the smaller maps were much better for me. at least the readme has a few hints for a few maps. also, MAP20's music sucks.

EDIT: and I still think the same as I did last time. Zones of Fear's levels are all very varied and surprisingly memorable, though not all in a bad way. With the big maps starting from MAP09, especially the jaeden maps, it drags out for much longer than it should. Some of the long ones are good, like MAP24 with it's puzzle-like gameplay and MAP26 with it's Eternal Doom-style gameplay and faux-3d aspect. MAP20 again, I have to say it, is terrible, for so many reasons, the enemies on the high valley walls are among the worst, but the part with the computer rooms and the big enemies ties up too much time and the final room is a slaughter area where the ammo is actually in the lava room beforehand (oh and fuck the lava). I barely even have the patience to even play MAP30 given how long THAT one is.

so yeah, jaeden still steals the show when it comes to crazy epics that are loved or hated. despite this enkeli also making large maps, they are less memorable, although a bit nicer to play. Damned's style is probably the best, compact, short maps with good gameplay throughout. a whole mixed bag.

Uhh, what? All I can see is ridiculously oversized rooms, tons of copypaste, borderline mediocre design and boring slaughter gameplay. Only Damned's and pipicz's maps are worth playing.

ZOF is focused on old-school gameplay. Levels are simply designed without complicated graphic features. Most of levels are very well playable. Maps are various themed so player can´t get bored. The difficulty is well balanced (with few exceptions). Overall - ZOF won´t win Cacowards but it is good work of community team. So - I don´t give 5/5 but "only" 4/5 - it´s adequate rating. leebigh, tester

Hmm, nice medieval castle..wait! Is that tekwall? Crates? What the hell? Jokes aside, a mishmash of themes, with mediocore traps. It's room, switch, oh look, trap. 3/5

Hey I really adored some of the moodier maps - Searching on Holy Ground, the hexagonal castle, etc. The levels are very spacious and explorative which suits me fine but will probably drive Plutonia fans mad, haha.

Nice collection of mostly good, not great levels. Will be challenging to a UV player, but Sunder, HR types will find this relatively ho-hum (except level 28 which would fit nicely in sluaghterfest, and 25 which is worthwhile for a speed run) But an excellent effort regardless 4/5

Lots of copy paste and rather tedious, repetitive fights would be the main weakness of this wad. Most maps are ok, though, and a few really stand out if you're into big fights!

Very mixed bag. Does have some very nice ideas. However... Efford: 5/5. Decoration: 3.5/5. Map layout: varies from 2/5 to 4/5. But: monster placement: 1/5. There are no surprises, all fights are about the same. So the most important thing: playability, gets very dull after some hours. It's a pity, otherwise I would give a solid 4.5/5, now 3/5.

This is the most memorable megawad I've played so far. The maps are from different authors and with very varying themes and each map is original in some way. I liked especially Enkeli's maps. His style is influenced by Heretic&Hexen and I am very familiar with these games. I also liked usage of medeival textures and Hexen 2 music. I am Czech so this wad was a must-play for me. I really enjoyed it and it became legendary for me so giving 5 stars, although I agree that there were some disadvantages too.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
