About This File

A hidden UAC base on Phobos: Not satisfied with their achievements, scientists have developed a new kind of teleporter, capable of not only sending things through space, but also through time and into different dimensions. There were two prototypes of this machine but one morning, one of them was found missing! Needless to say that one lone marine is sent through the second device, to find out where the missing prototype might be and who is behind the theft...

This is the very reason why I'm never enthusiastic about a zdoom mapset.

All you should not do in a doom mod. Looks more like a half-life, narrative shit.

this is pretty bad. the voice acting was horrible to hear and the levels although classic in gameplay pulled a few troll moments. design is shit for the most part and the ZDoom stuff that gets pulled gets really gimmicky and annoying.

I had fun with it, which is more than I can say for a lot of recent idgames releases. There were a few "fuck you" moments that felt really dickish and it's not the most pretty/polished set of levels but it's something I'll find myself coming back to and playing through in the future (again, more than I can say for a lot of modern idgames releases).

Not my cup of tea. Level design awful (and i tend to be forgiving in that area, gameplay being much more important). Don't expect much in the gameplay dept. either, though some interesting ideas scattered thru the game (running around someone's innards NOT being one of them)

Pretty good. Nice modern features, but the levels were a bit bland. BUt the gameplay was great, that matters more.

It's not a bad megawad. It reminds me of Fragport or Super Sonic Doom with its very simplistic map design that tries to make realistic worlds in the Doom engine. The story is interesting, it's hard to hear though when you're in the middle of the level with the guy trying to talk to you while dodging fireballs at the same time. It could have benefited from subtitles.

Revives my faith not only in Doom, but video gaming in general. Beyond excellent! My biggest grievance are the inescapable pits found around the map. Otherwise, thoroughly entertaining and brilliant.

As many others probably point out, this wad starts very slowly and is boring, and looks like it came out in like '98 and before, but going through it, level design starts improve. Especially chapter 4... I consider it as a climax. And story, although not THAT unique, deserves some merit too. 5/5

Most of the criticisms are valid: bland design, poor ammo/monster ratio, goofy jokes. But the combination of a plot and voice acting, as well as an attempt to really make a coherent levelset pushes this one up the scale for me. I think the positives outweigh the negatives, and it's been a while since I had fun playing through a whole megawad, the sort of lame early levels notwithstanding. Designer has lots of promise, but this was fun and inspiring and I definitely recommend it.-$loppy&oe

I just played through this thing in one sitting. I now have three types of cancer, my company went bankrupt, and my girlfriend died as a result. 0/5

Absolutely amazing. Great themes and atmosphere, the story and voice acting is unusual but it works and while the gameplay is a bit easy for the most part it does get tougher later on. But without a doubt it's one of the freshest, most creative and engaging wads to come out for a long time. It will be a great injustice when the cacowards come out and a random vanilla map gets an award instead of this...detail is NOT everything. Anyone voting 0/5 probably played the first few maps and quit.

Don't judge this was by its admittingly primitive first episode. It gets progressively better and by the final episode, some of the levels are astonishingly amazing such as maps 25, 28, and 29. The backstory is pretty captivating as well.

After playing the entire wad, I'm convinced this is some sort of in-joke that I'm not in on. The "better" fourth episode still features the same "irritating rooms and endless spaghetti-string corridors" layouts as the rest, but complements them with such highlights as sector-based hairy penises (I wish I were kidding) or Doomguy going on a guided tour of the digestive system, plopping out of a butt into a giant toilet. Are we positive this isn't Terry's magnum opus in disguise?

I endured through all of this on the promise that it would shake off its primitive beginnings. It never did.

5/5 should be reserved for the cream of the crop, not a megawad with poorly implemented ZDoom features, '94 era layouts, , awful weapon progression, one or two decent maps and a story. Sorry Deathmatcher, I think you've been a victim of overly generous criticism here. You can do better, If I were you I'd take the best levels in here, give them a makeover, and release them in a new package. You could even keep the story as long as you changed the relative bits. Skippable cutscenes would help as well.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
