About This File

Harmata said it best: "I could've picked random wads from idgames and then combine them in a megawad and it would be exactly the same thing as this project."

The goal of this project was to get as many mappers as possible to contribute to a single project. All maps were accepted and nobody was rejected. This megawad contains 40 maps from 40 different mappers from the Doomworld forums.

Better than I expected.  Some maps are more interesting than others.  Generally the maps are short and is a quick play for 40 levels.

I have enjoy mostly on Map01~12(not everyone), Map13 and later decided use "sv_fastweapons 1" to prevent feels boring due many of slaughter-type of maps. Map21 just awesome, but my GZDooM just sucks when I hit the 6-key switch...Map39, ToD always good at slaughter maps, isn't it? Even I don't like them... Map40 just a waste of UDMF, you can do something better with that, sector666. 3/5 -playerlin

Right. Map 1, ~30 revenants, a dozen Barons and 2 Cyberdemons. Yawn. I cannot even begin to express how much I loathe these idiot slaughter fests. How old are the authors? 12? Sick to bloody death of downloading garbage like this and having hopes of an enjoyable game pissed all over. Mark crap like this for what it is - idiot overkill crap.

Goal reached. Having said that: 1) authors arrogantly praising their own work (Doomkid 4*, Katamori 5*) instantly leads to a 0* vote, or in this case with multiple authors: 1 pt decrement; 2) except for map02 and a very few others, this work varies between meh and absolutely horrible. Overall: small 2* - 1 = 1*. IOW: goal reached, but next time try to focus on quality instead of quantity.

Holy shit, who in hell designed the fucking stupid maps 32 and 17? Those awful tons-of-enemy-hordes levels ruined completely my initial fun with this megawad. On the other hand, I particularly loved map 31, flawlessly detailed in every sense. What a shame that due to some designer's fault this megawad could be much, MUCH better.

A mixed bag. Generally I'd recommend Maps 2 and 13 plus any map that is by an author you like (look at the automap for authors). I think the other highlights that come to my mind would be 14, 15, 16 (though it's a bit random), 18, and 25. All of these have respectable mapper names behind them.

People lauded map02, but it annoyed me because it crashes vanilla (Doom2-plus). Do NOT place the player very close to a wall in vanilla or limit removing levels! I played the first few levels and they were rather bland, although the first one wasn't bad (I didn't play the second one yet). Placing all the maps in one WAD just makes many people play this as a megawad, and the balance and placement of the maps sucks for that.

^ I think the real problem with map02 is that player start is placed on a vertex. Also by limit removing people usually mean prboom-plus -complevel 2 or even Doom 2 format levels tested only in ZDoom. Yes, the term sucks and probably should be avoided.

The first fourth of the wad is fun and nicely designed but almost everything that follows is mediocre at best. A huge chunk of the maps on here drag on for way too long without providing anything of interest visually as well as combat-wise. Worth a look but don't expect too much.

Meh. Most maps weren't that great at all. Some were outstanding like MAP02 and MAP13, but most like MAP01 MAP10 and many more were just mediocore. 3/5

An expectedly mixed bag, that inevitably doesn't flow because of the random unrelated maps. It doesn't make for a very smooth ride, however the gameplay is good enough throughout with some nice surprises here and there to warrant the play. 3 stars from me. -TRRobin.

Oh common, there are 40 maps in this pack, but good are just few of them. I know they didn't want to reject any map, but it needed at least some feedback and corrections. Most of maps are below avarage and some of them are annoying or full of bugs. Best maps are 2, 14 and 16. These 3 maps out of 40 are really good, around 10 are avarage others are below avarage or even worse. It makes for me max 2 stars. 2/5 - Damned

Can't believe no one has commented yet! Everything is present in this WAD - Things that feel modern and new, all the way to maps that feel straight outta '96. However, ntohing that pops out as 'terrible', just a lot of different styles. Definitely worth checking out, I wish I'd have gotten involved!

EDIT @that stupid guest: I had nothing to do with the development of this wad lol

Trying to be funny in map14 with that invulnerability lift? Well. That is the worst level design i've seen in years. Not funny to try over 100 times to get correct strafing speed for it. I went to doombuilder and made it lil slower like you should've done. Jerk.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
