Fernito's Phobos base (silly name, I know, but I haven't thought of an official name yet xD).

About This File

Yet another Phobos base-themed episode, although I tried that levels actually looked like what they're named after, instead of looking like just generic bases like they did in the original game (don't take me wrong by the way, I LOVE the original game maps :). Also, while the maps are meant to be more detailed than the original levels, they are by no means as detailed as in some other WADs like KDIZD, for example.

On a side note, these here are my very first Doom maps. I used to map for Duke Nukem 3D before, but I always wanted to make maps for Doom, so one day I stopped being lazy and downloaded Doom Builder 2. I was surprised at how easy and intuitive it was to use, specially compared to Duke Nukem 3D's Build and Mapster32 mapping utilities.

NOTE TO ALL VANILLA-DOOM LOVERS: the only reason why this WAD needs an "advanced" port is to get rid of the visplane limits; the gameplay and mapping style is pretty much what you would expect from a vanilla-compatible WAD (so don't expect fancy ZDoom effects or whatever).

I only skipped E1M6 because I get lost and can't find a way out. The whole mapset really looks nice with E1 feel. The difficulty level of this mapset goes so high after first few levels), and the last level just meh...even it has E1M8 feels but seems missing something, when compare other maps... 3/5 -playerlin

Lots of work, but not very good. Rectangular and often symmetric and repetitive map layout, ambiance varying between good and meh, and gameplay sadly never got me on my toes and is often dull. 3* mostly for the effort.

Is this the worst E1 episode replacement? Well, no. Is it worth playing? Depends how desperate you are to kill time. Maps range from good-ish to tedious and annoying. If you don't expect much, you won't be disappointed.

This wad would be better with new textures and new music, but as it is it is okay! Good effort! 3/5

I wanted to give this episode a much higher rating due to all the work that obviously went in it, but there are some issues. E1M3-E1M5 have incredibly annoying layouts with copy/paste sectors and tedious switch hunting. E1M4 had the worst game play, with shotgun guys too high up to kill that can shoot down and kill you. With more sensible layouts, I would have given more stars to Fernito's Phobos. However, this episode has amazing detail, and E1M6 is the best city map I've played in a long time.

First half is very good, second is rather shitty. 3/5 - Zalewa. I'd give 2.5 if I could.

a perfect blend of gameplay and detail was made to create this wad, quality mapping mixed with some clever ideas (like the water pumps making noise in E1M2) as well as good mechanics equals one pretty damn fine wad by Fernito, this is a must play

Uh, I dunno, it looks quite creative actually but it's yet another E1 replacement that tries to mimic design and gameplay of "Knee deep in the dead" and I think I'm unable to enjoy wads like this anymore. On a side note, the TEXTURE lumps are broken so you'll see some graphic glitches in classic ports. I made a quick fix, here is a temporary link: http://tinyurl.com/b gst379 (remove spaces)

Name might be silly, but maps really aren't. Author mentioned his experience in Duke 3D mapping and belive me - it really shows.

Perhaps this would have been better as a throwback for Doom II? Would have liked some of the Doom II monsters in these. It's a fun play nonetheless and it is well designed. And it's great to see people still making levels for Ult. Doom after so many years. 4/5

You're right,Fernito. The name is goofy, but the gameplay is good. But it is your wad,so you can name it anything you want.

Wonderful WAD. Really well-designed, with good looks and gameplay, and really giving you that E1 feeling again. (To the second reviewer: if you don't like E1-style WADs, don't play them, for Romero's sake!) Some levels were a little formulaic in their design; others, notably E1M6, were simply outstanding. 4.5/5 - ZZ

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
