About This File

A single player level designed for the Monochrome Mapping Project on the Doomworld Forums - http://tinyurl.com/bp2od5n.

This is a Monochromatic Black & White experience that will test your perception. The idea was to design a clean map devoid of detail but retaining character. The WAD is designed exclusively with Zdoom in mind as it does make use of Slopes, Stacked 3D sectors and ACS scripts.

As well as making heavy use of Da Werecat's textures I have also added my own black and white door, lift, floor and brick textures.

Screenshots can be found here: http://sdrv.ms/QnkSyG

Enjoy,

Dave

Distracting and rough monochromatic design.

I like the last part of selections. The style is so special, even if I think just a little hard and minor level of boring... 3.5/5 -playerlin

I don't quite understand why this got released on it's own when it's already in (and still is in) the monochrome mapping project. It achieves the basic aims of the project but the gameplay feels too flat and easy. Needs a serious knock out punch monster threat wise and also player weapon wise (there is a "secret" near the start which makes the second point irrelevant though). 3 stars

I like the way it looks, even though it made my eyes hurt. Outside of the pretty new level design with BUILD-styled zdoom features, there's nothing new or exciting in terms of gameplay. Monster selection is weak and tired, instead I'd rather have some new monochromatic monsters to fit the theme or none at all - the level is nice enough to just look at on its own.

sorry, the mapping depth just fails. I like how less bits are being used, but it's too less. The mapping perception made my brain fart. Try Hero Forever for an example. ~1/5

This was pretty awesome! I can understand how it makes some eyes hurt, but I don't personally have any problems with this map. It's definitely surreal at some parts, almost like an Aluqah map without the clown imagery. Overall nice stuff! I would wholeheartedly welcome a Monochromatic Nightmare 2 if it ever happens.

Interesting idea. And it had its moments, but all in all it felt a bit too gimmicky for my taste. 3/5 - ZZ

The map was decent enough, above average, but I'm not sure how many levels I could play like that... 3/5. -TRRobin.

Killing a Cyb with a Shotgun and Chaingun isn't the easiest of tasks, but kill it I did: I wonder if I missed anything too important. :P It's kind of difficult making out some of the more important bits of architechture with the colour scheme, so I'd recommend some more detail on the walls. It's pretty decent though, so 3 stars. - Obsidian

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
