The maps are looks nice and wonderful, but monsters, gameplay design and everything else just meh. I'm sure it would be nice mod if those overpowered monsters and some weird shit removed, but I guess it also a nice co-op mapset but for single player, just...not my taste...you know just those overpowered monsters ruined the whole thing...oh and this mod does needed old version of ZDooM engine for working, the latest version of GZDooM just can't start the mod with scripting error. 2/5 -playerlin

Some nice and imaginative maps. Gameplay, on the other hand, is ridiculously hard and beyond annoying, and will only appeal to cutting edge slaughter enthusiasts.

Not my taste. Mostly bland levels with large monster populations and situations that require either insane reactions or lots of practice. 2/5

4 stars from 13 votes? All right: the BFG guy is too slow and gets hurt by his own guns. Each class's unique weapon runs out of ammo too quick. I suddenly turn into a chicken. The maps are quite simply trollbait and I would genuinely like to see someone playing this on Youtube, but cannot be arsed to look. Agreed with the reviewer who calls this unplayable... unless there is some kind of magic formula to playing it, some kind of magic only a fanatic would know.

Basically unplayable (at least in GZdoom). I don't see what was "epic" about this. You last about 15 seconds at most. 1/5

Fucking most epic and hilarious mod ever. Recommend for fun: Try it on Brutal doom, nothings more hilarious than being turned into a pig or chicken by an enemy spell caster, only to be knee's height, and proceeding to bite the Leg off an imp or zombie, HI-LARIOUS!!!! 5/5. 2 seconds to midnight as a level track, right on. :)

Definitely an improvement over the original. There are new areas too. There's still a bug in Map30 that needs to be fixed. 5/5.

This is absolutely great man, good job. The only gripe I have is the item/monster placement. 4/5 - Netherstorm

Mostly frustrating and ridiculously spammed out gameplay... die, reload, kill a few more, save, die, reload, ad nauseam! Or bunker down somewhere and let them kill each other for hours... what's the point in that? Agree with the person who said they'd like to see it played on youtube (was this playtested at all?) Not a fan of the monsters and weird items from other games either-sorry! Too bad, because the architecture is really beautiful. Could have been a classic with properly designed gameplay...

A tough slaughter WAD with some decent and even dazzling architecture. One must play with caution because the number of traps and opposition thrown at the player. 4/5 Mr. Chris

Meh. Visually stunning (if very boxy), but unbalanced gameplay. Getting slaughter maps right is an art, and I don't see much of that here. Too much focus on novel monsters, too; gimmicky maps, and poor ammo balance (sometimes too little, sometimes too much). Not sure if custom classes were playtested much in these maps. 2.5/5 for good looks and all that. - ZZ

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
