About This File

This map is one of the many parts of the Secret Santa Imitation Project, led by Brian "Snakes" Knox. It was meant to imitate the style of Chris "lupinx-Kassman" Kassap, and is designed for Single Player, Co-op, and Deathmatch play.

A lonely medieval outpost overlooking a large sea sits on the edge of the world. In it lies a magical sword of power, waiting to be taken by a brave adventurer. But be warned - rumor has it that the sword was sealed away in order to keep an alleged curse placed on it at bay...

A sprawling and grandiose castle map, with a magical sword providing an ideal MacGuffin. The flow of the map and its intelligent reuse of areas - especially a wide, curved walkway - is very impressive and there's a real sense of adventure and escalation across the 30 to 40 minutes this will likely take to complete. The long-awaited finale is a little underwhelming and there are areas where the textures ought to be more varied, but this is a fine piece of work.

Pretty damn fun map. Open spaces encouraged monster infighting which is always very welcome. Some monster placement was quite challenging, especially in the area with all the imps behind the bars, and arachnatrons raining plasma from above. Well done!

I did not like the beginning and I did not like the ending, but the rest was cool to an extent.

Really well designed and fun map to play. Great progression of difficulty towards the end, and so you better be on your toes! Well done Matt. 5 stars from me. -TRRobin.

A beautifully made castle-themed map with some very challenging fights especially towards the end. Despite some serious heavy-hitters making appearances, it never seems outright unfair which I think is a real achievement. Nice music by James Paddock, too. 5/5

Quite an excellent map! Good-looking, fun to play, long enough to keep you busy for a while, yet never boring. You always have an idea of where to go and what to do; there's no switchhunts, and you're kept on your toes while also being afforded breathing room when you need it. I only wish the secrets had been made a little more obvious, and that there'd been a teleporter back from near the exit (e.g. its backside). 4.5/5 - ZZ

Epic fantasy adventure accompanied by a very fitting soundtrack. The gameplay is somewhat tedious/grindy at the start, it encourages cautious camping tactics instead of something fun and dynamic. It gets better though, with some exciting traps in the second half. Worth a look.

Beautiful grand design with tedious hide-and-peck gameplay. You can do, and have done, WAAAY better than this.

Very cool level. I mostly agree with Memfis' analysis so I won't repeat what's already been said. 4.5/5 stars is my vote.

I shall say, this was one of the best individual maps of '13. It has all the strengths of Coffee Break (which is definitely a positive) and then adds some more, undoubtedly influenced by the immitation goal, such as a more adventurous feel, a more expansive layout yet one that doesn't get old, and one h*ck of an ending. I actually had more fun here than in Shaman's Device, though the later is still the magnum opus of aesthetics. Looking for more Secret Santa!

I won't hesitate to call this epic. Gorgeous design, great visuals and entertaining gameplay with some unsettling, but perfectly manageable pinnacle points. Matt's the man.

Sorry but I found this very tedious to play. Also, for me this failed in the goal of imitating LK. I enjoyed his CC4 maps immensely. To me this seems more of a caricature, grossly exaggerating some of the traits to the point they become annoying. I enjoyed your Coffee Break but not this 3/5.

Absolutely amazing map. The soundtrack fits, the layout's impressive and it's pretty challenging to boot. My only complaint is that it's only one level. Hey, Matt! Make more maps like this and make it a megawad! 5/5

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
