Knee-Deep in ZDoom

About This File

The experience of playing through Knee-Deep in the Dead is one that many gamers will never forget, but through the years the episode has become too easy for many to play through and enjoy the way they did the first time.

Knee-Deep in ZDoom is an interpretation of Id Software's original groundbreaking production, Knee-Deep in the Dead. The team has focused on expanding the original episode by utilizing the power of Randy Heit's ZDoom port; adding new areas, features, and gameplay devices not possible under the original Doom engine. Knee-Deep in ZDoom is a new experience, but holds strong to the atmosphere of the original. Relive the fear. Relive the nightmare. Relive Phobos.

Legendary. I don't know how people can't give it a 5/5 just for the insane amount of effort.... each level has to have thousands upon thousands of linedefs and sectors. Sure, the levels are massive (with lots of backtracking.) It's not perfect but it's at least in the top 5 wads of all time. (z1m3 frustrated the shit out of me). Custom monsters were cool, didn't have a problem with them. New sprite angles for pickups were fine.. the architecture puts my maps to shame. Congrats Torm667 and team.

Lots of repetitiveness. As others may have said, this is like the Halo of Doom. Super overhyped, but fell short in key areas. Though the architecture is absolutely astonishing. 3/5

Looks very very good, but got boring after a few levels. Gameplay is nothing new really: extremely well balanced average dooming, A+. Still, Cyber wad and White0 are better, because they offer new ways to play Doom.

Dude, freaking amazing! Also the special way to get to the super secret level, it's genius. But I think you should have a SS level for 100 % kills if you guys make Episode 2.

To the guy two reviews up from this one, amount of effort doesn't equate to amount of quality. A few interesting scenes here and there, and a hell of a lot of really terrible design and gameplay decisions throughout. What a shame of wasted time and potential.

E1M6, total pain in the ass. I can't find the exit ANYWHERE! (even when I cheated lol)

Yuck. I personally thought this megawad strays way too far away from the spirit of the original episode of Doom. It feels too much like Doom 3. In fact, it feels waaay too much like playing a Tormentor667 map. This should have just been called Knee-Deep in Tormentor667's Doom. There's way too much backtracking. It's still worth looking at though. The presentation of this megawad is nice. I suggest skipping Z1M3 though. I thought that was the worst map out of this megawad.

Honestly you can't vote this up just because of the amount of effort that went into it. This episode is just very dull!

People who said gameplay is boring I dont know what megawad they've played. Maps overdetailed dont impressive me, but this episode likes me, has a decent gameplay and design. Good looking is only a positive detail. With less than that many projects have at least 4, but trolls never rest. I think that all T667 works are underrated, there are people who hate big projects because is not in line with the old school. One thing does not remove the other. 4.5/5

It got boring in the first level and then it dragged on until level 8. The new monsters are pretty pointless. The new guns do not strike me in any way (I was hoping there was a submachine gun to pick up after killing the former human that fired at twice the rate). The level design was overdone but beautiful. Recommended for a single play through then removal from hard drive.

All the levels are great, however with one exception. E1M3 is a must SKIP, warp to Z1M9 instead (Unless you must, because you are a completionist.). Looks just plain amazing. The custom weapons weren't all that special, and while some of the custom monsters were interesting, most weren't nothing new or exciting at all. Overall, it's worth the wait of the download. BTW, I feel E1M8 was the best. In fact, I was most hyped on getting there the most. Boy, was I in for something for sure. - Roy 4/5

Visually, this is absolutely marvellous. I have never seen anything take advantage of ZDoom quite like this does. These are tough levels though.

Blech. Completely out of the spirit of doom, yet still claims to "Hold strong to the atmosphere of the original." This could not be farther from the truth. It removed the fun factor, and replaced it with horror elements. Apparently, the designers of this pack thought that games should not be fun, but just pleasing to look at. 1/5

I originally thought KDiTD was tan and grey metal. I don't think the brown quake-rock and green-tinged dark grey metal was evocative of the original, hell it didn't even feel like I was playing something even slightly like KDiTD except for a passing feeling like a ghost of a family member just walked by at some parts. One big mistake is that you guys didn't even try to make the levels represent what they were supposed to be (e.g. hangar), so I can't even give points out for that.

No need to update this masterpiece! I still have and play the wad from the release date 01 June, 2007 (version 1.0). Everything is okay with this... but I also played kizd_12, but I had to use the rotations.pk3 that is no longer included in the main file. Great work! 5/5

I'm very impressed with the level design, the use of ZDoom features to force players to complete objectives in order to proceed and the use of different monsters. 5/5 -Mr. Chris

This map brought back memories. An older friend had doom and I played it only three or four times. I could hardly control my movements and any former human was some fight. So for me it met it's targets and I'm thankfull for that. coldfusio

The best Wad I ever played and the only Wad that gave me the same feelings I had when I played Doom for the first time. This is more realistic and much more better than the real Epidode 1: the movie, the puzzle, the new type of monsters, the new weapons, the new sound, the PDA and so on are simply legendary and superb. This Wad goes beyond any of my expectations and dreams. This Wad isn't repetitive, it is just very hard and I love this too! 5/5 but you deserve 6/5 guys!

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
