Knee-Deep in ZDoom

About This File

The experience of playing through Knee-Deep in the Dead is one that many gamers will never forget, but through the years the episode has become too easy for many to play through and enjoy the way they did the first time.

Knee-Deep in ZDoom is an interpretation of Id Software's original groundbreaking production, Knee-Deep in the Dead. The team has focused on expanding the original episode by utilizing the power of Randy Heit's ZDoom port; adding new areas, features, and gameplay devices not possible under the original Doom engine. Knee-Deep in ZDoom is a new experience, but holds strong to the atmosphere of the original. Relive the fear. Relive the nightmare. Relive Phobos.

It was a pretty fun ride. I was never a fan of E1M4, so that's one level I didn't enjoy, but the rest was great. Encounter the Shadow monsters for the first time was pretty amazing. The feeling of going through something so familar yet different here is what pulled me in. KDiZD has a warming familarity to it. It's a great wad, so congrats to the KDiZD team for this wonderful work of art! -Marty Kirra (5/5)

dull, new monsters suck, aimless wandering sucks, intermission fails.

Irritating gameplay. Irritating design. Irritating irritation. Irritating sprite rotations. Irritating custom monster abuse. Irritating inconsistent ammo use. Irritating stupid. I've made more action-packed games in RPGMaker 2003. The intermission screen was pretty cool though.

I know this wad really received a mixed reception from the community, but I have to say I really loved this. Yes it doesn't really retain the E1 atmosphere all that well at points and some of the maps may be too overdone/confusing for some, but I still enjoyed it. I'll admit it probably could have been better, but I felt it was well worth my time. So I agree with the above, not perfect, but an incredible effort, and I'm certainly willing to call it good. In fact I'll be nice and give a 5. -Do0minat0r

This wad is alright. It does showcase some interesting features here and there, but is overall nothing new or particularly special. The gameplay is repetitive and is often irritating and lacks much fun, and thus contributes to the downfall of this wad's replay value.

Nice idea and lots of effort, but sadly the maps are dull and boring to play (e.g. Z1M3). Detail is inconsistent. Some of the new enemies add a lot to the said boredom. The very last boss is terrible (the flaming Barons were great though, they should have ended the wad with them). Hopefully the Shores of ZDoom will be better and made by people who actually know what the original Doom is about.

I'm going to have to say that this is sincerely overrated and overhyped. By that I mean it didn't deserve the hype that it was given at all (mostly by the zdoom community.) The detail (perhaps too much though), effects and general effort I approve of, but generally the gameplay is lacking, as it's rather boring and repetitive. 3.5/5 (well 4 stars technically) ~TawmDee

I thought your work was very good, if a bit overcrowded in parts. "Education is unique among consumer products – when it fails to work as advertised, it's the customer that gets labelled as defective."

Meh. Stupid, repetitive, overly difficult, tedious. I don't care how much effort went in. What matters is what is released, which, in this case, is a technological feat that plays like the first hub of Hexen. And that's bad.

There is a lot to say about this, way too much to cover all here. It's probably generated more of a love/hate trend based on gameplay than all but a small handful of other wads ever released. Some will love how E1 is recreated; others will despise it for the loss of the original atmosphere. I sit on the positive side, and look at KDiZD as its own entity. I enjoyed it, architecture certainly being the highlight, but I was sad when I was done with it which should say something. A personal 5/5

Over-hyped. Having never played the leaks, I expected much, MUCH better. I'm giving 4 starts only for the amount of effort put in.

ATTENTION: Due to its sheer size, Z1M8 is prone to locking up GZDoom while saving, resulting in savegame corruption. Worst of all, it's highly unpredictable; I got burned while saving immediately before taking the blue key and I've been unable to reproduce the lockup since. USE MULTIPLE SAVE FILES when playing Z1M8 in GZDoom. If possible, make a new savegame every time.

all of the people that hate this are insane. it was incredible. i have never been amazed by a doom addon but this one is definetly one that got me. sonic maybe but KDIZD does deserve its sequel in progress and I will be there to play it. I thought I could make something kickass but the competition is too fierce.

I have no idea why they decided to disable monster infighting, but if you want to enable it (at least in Zandronum, I dunno how the console works in other ports) go to the console (` or ~ key) and type 'infighting +1' without the apostrophes. An added bonus is that monsters will fight their own kind.

Effort was all in appearance, not gameplay... slow, overly convoluted puzzles, too little uptime versus slow wandering. I could still make out what was left of my small contribution at least, albeit it was butchered into glaringly less fitting appearances. I also told you not to mess with my damn tanks, but you DID! Perish the thought that you'd leave something different and completely unexpected in that one, secret (super-secret considering the nearly impossible puzzle in E1M3) level. 3/5 -Cyber-Menace

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
