Knee-Deep in ZDoom

About This File

The experience of playing through Knee-Deep in the Dead is one that many gamers will never forget, but through the years the episode has become too easy for many to play through and enjoy the way they did the first time.

Knee-Deep in ZDoom is an interpretation of Id Software's original groundbreaking production, Knee-Deep in the Dead. The team has focused on expanding the original episode by utilizing the power of Randy Heit's ZDoom port; adding new areas, features, and gameplay devices not possible under the original Doom engine. Knee-Deep in ZDoom is a new experience, but holds strong to the atmosphere of the original. Relive the fear. Relive the nightmare. Relive Phobos.

The gist of it all: Like all the criticism on here, the big problem I have is the lack of ammo. This wad was engineered towards players who get-off to hardcore gaming. Regardless of fetishes involving present difficulties, the detail is good, the episode seems massive enough to accommodate Tormentor667's ego without pissing me off. 2/5 --C. Goat

While graphically pleasing, it falls short of an actual Doom feel. That isn't always a bad thing, but spacious puzzle-crawls on megamaps do not make for the face-paced, run-n-gun fun most are use to. What could have been an amazing piece is ultimately ruined by an over ambitious size and action-breaking key/switch hunts. The effort put into this is amazing, but it feels like the play-testers only hunted for bugs and not gameplay. I'd still love to see a follow-up. 3/5

Replacing the Plasmarifle and BFG with the grenade launcher and rifle was kinda stupid in my opinion.

^Anyone who doesn't know how to even spell PROJECT correctly automatically loses all credibility in their review. As far as this project goes, the amount of effort in creating this is really impressive and admirable but gameplay is really lacking. Did you guys even check to see if this was FUN to play? I fell asleep playing through Z1M3.

I had to finally try this to see what all the controversy was about, and I have to say that this really is kind of the archetype of the disappointing ZDoom WAD. It has lots of cool details and neat little bells and whistles, and is admirable in that regard, but gameplay has been left behind and what we have is a very slow-moving slog of a WAD, doing very poor justice to what made the source material fun. 3/5 for great but poorly executed effort.

Impressive stuff. Gameplay is a little sluggish at times and there were a few places I seemed to be running in circles looking for a switch in these huge, 'Knee Deep in the Dead' style levels. The game had a DOOM3 feel to it with the well thought out architecture and level design. The only thing missing was the Super Shotgun but still well worth the 0.02Gb download. 5/5

5/5. It's an interpretation of original, but not a remake. Justly underrated is a nonsense phrase. Something underrated or overrated, it's not properly valued, as the word indicates.

It's OK. Could use more quality over quantity in detail and less crappy custom monsters.

Legendary! Legendary for the enormous amount of time and efforts to make it done and finished, when you know how many other abandoned projects!!! Legendary because it was the effort of a whole team, for the only purpose to give us, doomers, the best of what they were able to do. Yes, legendary, indeed!!! 5 stars - Jive

Extremely well-designed and beautiful wad overall. Few throwbacks would be a bit too far extended last level and few spots where details prevent you from dodging accurately. Recommended wad. Actually, episode 2 is my all-time favourite... but that might only remain as a dream. :)

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
