Knee-Deep in ZDoom

About This File

The experience of playing through Knee-Deep in the Dead is one that many gamers will never forget, but through the years the episode has become too easy for many to play through and enjoy the way they did the first time.

Knee-Deep in ZDoom is an interpretation of Id Software's original groundbreaking production, Knee-Deep in the Dead. The team has focused on expanding the original episode by utilizing the power of Randy Heit's ZDoom port; adding new areas, features, and gameplay devices not possible under the original Doom engine. Knee-Deep in ZDoom is a new experience, but holds strong to the atmosphere of the original. Relive the fear. Relive the nightmare. Relive Phobos.

If wads were judged by the amount of time and work put into them then this would be the greatest Doom wad ever. They aren't and this isn't. It's not even in the first rank. Far too much time has been put into effects, far too little into the basis of all great Doom wads, gameplay. Disappointing after all I'd heard about it. 3 stars on the basis of poor gameplay.

IMO this is a candidate for the most underrated release ever. I thought it was a blast, and I did often follow the hype. Honestly I do not see why so many people think this has trashy gameplay. 5/5

It is ok. But not unique in the doom history like real exceptional stuff (examples foreverhood / portal gun / scythe 2 among others).m1 and m2 are just more detailed doom maps...m3 is a headpain. The things get better until m6 being the top for me. Later levels are equal rated. 4/5

Historical! The only wad I have ever played that is better than this is DVII, and that's saying something! Superb levels and TONS of detail, along with the classic E1 feel make this wad worth playing a thousand times. My only complaints: 1) The levels aren't super-hard, but some of the levels took over an hour to beat just because it's IMPOSSIBLE to find where to go! 2) There are too many flavors of imp =6 3) I can't edit this! Stupid pk3 files.

Awesome wad, insanely good detail but some levels (like Z1M3) have way too many switch and key hunts. 4/5 -KC32

Overburdened, perhaps more about quantity than true quality, and made with skill, but unevenly. Some levels are good (2, 8, 10), but others tedious (1, 3, 6). The idea of adding to id's E1 is poor, and part of the new stuff, while decent, feels a bit off. The visuals also vary, from appealing to annoying. It's like they tried to do everything in one wad, and none of it really hit the nail on the head. On the bright side, its glitter helps recall or attract people to the game. I don't get what's so great about this mod. It's cool, but it's nothing to go crazy over. I know several classic megawads that are much better than this. The new weapons are pretty decent and the new enemies are kinda cool, most of the levels are a real pain to go through. I got really bored playing z1m3. I couldn't continue playing after that map, even after skipping some maps. If it weren't for the excessive key/switch hunting and extremely confusing map layouts, I'd rate this higher. 3/5

Big wad, just finished it yesterday. At first I found it intresting enough to warrant keeping on playing. But in the end it was more a matter of thinking, "Well, I've come this far." E1M7 is one of my favorit maps ever. I didn't see the same greatness in this though. Z1M9 was probably the best map in the wad for me. Some nice things, weighed down by a lot of really bad things. Like the last boss for instance. 3/5 - Kristus

An enjoyable wad overall. The custom elements such as the score system and additional monsters are vry well implemented and you can see obvious vestiges of the original e1 levels in the wad, though they're vastly expanded. The gameplay is decent, although I did find wading through the sprawling levels a bit repetitive and there aren't that many 'smart' ambushes. It's almost impossible for the wad to triumph over the hype surrounding the project, but all things considered, it's an enjoyable wad. ****

While the wad suffers from tedious switchhunting at times, the gameplay is alright. The real highlight of this mapset is the visuals and ambiance, which really makes you feel like you're starting a new game just like Doom E1 back in '93. 5/5

The final stage was perhaps the most impressive thing I have ever seen done with zDoom. I especially liked the third from last battle, when the really suspenseful music kicked in. It was completely unexpected, and got me pumped for the fight! And then the gigantic final boss was simply brilliant.

"KDiZD" has proven that superb architecture, love to detail, modern features, huge size and breathtaking atmosphere just aren't enough to place it among the legends. The gameplay was frustrating, too repetitive, like running around in circles. Overall design: 5/5 Gameplay: 1/5 ------------------- Total: 3/5

In fact, the most fun I've had in a long time of dooming! There's a few issues with item placement, and the last map was ruined since you get no ammo or health to fight the bosses. But there's no denying that up until that every single level is legendary! -Ix

Try and get this to run on a 386. Absolutely beautiful to look at and feels like a real adventure to progress through. The new monsters are a mixed bag, with some looking great (shadow imps) and some feeling a bit out of place (lion barons, satyres). The levels are fun to play, but can get a bit switch-hunty. There are a lot of suprises, even right to the end. Well worth the time to play. 5/5.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
