Knee-Deep in ZDoom

About This File

The experience of playing through Knee-Deep in the Dead is one that many gamers will never forget, but through the years the episode has become too easy for many to play through and enjoy the way they did the first time.

Knee-Deep in ZDoom is an interpretation of Id Software's original groundbreaking production, Knee-Deep in the Dead. The team has focused on expanding the original episode by utilizing the power of Randy Heit's ZDoom port; adding new areas, features, and gameplay devices not possible under the original Doom engine. Knee-Deep in ZDoom is a new experience, but holds strong to the atmosphere of the original. Relive the fear. Relive the nightmare. Relive Phobos.

Good wad, but I can understand why some people dislike it. It gets better as you go along. 3.5/5

Kicks ass! Some levels scared the hell out of me. Defiantly gave me one hell of a rush. 5 stars. These guys better make the Shores Of ZDoom (or whatever the hell they're gonna call it).

This is an amazing wad, those who claim this as garbage are jelious little kids who can't do any better them selves. There was alot of consideration to the monster placement wasn't the best, but it was still very enjoyable. 5/5!!! Good job guys!

I guess all the negative comments are deleted because anyone who hates this wad is a jealous moron who can't map. This wad is not fun.

As always, people that don't like difficult gameplay or large maps piss all over it because they KNOW what makes a map great. A large project with a lot of work and time put into it damnwell deserves the kudos for finally finishing it. How the hell does a p.o.s. like wow.wad get stars and something infinitely better that is torrents of fun like this get trolls throwing zeros in there? This is a minimum 3 star project, for the attempt and time alone. 4/5. Not legendary, but far from bad.

I was absolutely amazed by this at first, but after beating it and looking at it more closely, I've noticed quite a few flaws. The texturing is mediocre, there's areas that have detail where they shouldn't and areas that don't have detail where they should, etc. I'm sure TSoZD will be better judging by the screenshots.

Legendary. The amount of effort put into this was unbelievable, the detail was monstrous and Gameplay was just perfect. Very clever use of portals to simulate 3D Effects in ZDoom. Don't mind those people who can't do it better, they're only jealous ;) 5 Stars, for this legendary masterpiece of the artwork class ;) -KeksDose

I wasn't around with the hype and all but this is one of best wads I've played. It really captures the style of the original doom episode but more fun to play since it has more atmosphere, more difficulty, its more scarier and has an extreme amount of detail in level design. It has some imperfections here and there but thats ok not even professional product are perfect ;) 5/5 stars.

wow. played through the wad without cheats, and boy z1m7 is a beaut. so's z1m9, and its soo tricky to find that damn switch ^_^ It's soooo frustrating to hunt switches and doors all over a gigantic map. great boss fights though. 4/5

Uhh, this is a great wad and all but the level design is pretty abysmal at times. You know the DM wad that had niches and crap like that all over it, and they were there just to piss you off? I kinda get similar vibes from this one. Kinda liked this one though. 3 / 5

Z1M8 was amazing unfortunantly Z1M3 was a switch hunting clusterfuck and ive always hated E1M4 so im ignoring its Z1M4 counterpart in my vote so 4/5

Minus: Lots of hype, too long to finish, tons of bugs for the development time, crappy extra monsters. PLUS: Okay architecture, great intermission. It's worth three stars at best.

This was an impressive piece of work. 2 years and 9 months of work is a very long time and a hellava effort was put into this wad. It is a highly modified Episode 1 with a new level Z1M10 included. Its a huge download size but worth it. The amount of stars this PK3 gets is 5. Get it now! -PC

I was one of the beta testers (and a highly ineffective one, as I was too busy being wowed by how new and complex it all seemed) and now I've had the time to look at it again, I have to say that the effort gives it 5 on it's own. Yes there are other good and bad points to it, like level of detail, inconsistencies, some not fun parts and some amazing parts, but I'd still consider it a 5* wad. More fun than most of the other masterpieces of zdoom, at any rate.

Map6 is an enjoyable and well designed map. Unfortunately the texture and detailing work in the other maps can be poor and inconsistent. The 'tank' at the start of map01 is franky laughable. There isn't much of an E1 feel, or a definite theme running through the maps. The shielded lion enemy seems completely out of place. There's some nice ideas and gameplay but its spread too thinly 3/5 -Szymanski

Design over gameplay, and considering the design is a hideous cluster fuck abomination of over detail that is an eyesore to look at. 0/5 Even Chris Wright's levels looked better than this.

I played this... and I hate to say this is average at best, awful at worst. The detail is way too distracting and the gameplay is ill-planned and poorly executed, making it really really boring. And ten huge levels one after another = exhausting and not fun. I liked the Nuclear Plant remake, though not enough to improve the overall score. 2/5 - Wills

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
