Knee-Deep in ZDoom

About This File

The experience of playing through Knee-Deep in the Dead is one that many gamers will never forget, but through the years the episode has become too easy for many to play through and enjoy the way they did the first time.

Knee-Deep in ZDoom is an interpretation of Id Software's original groundbreaking production, Knee-Deep in the Dead. The team has focused on expanding the original episode by utilizing the power of Randy Heit's ZDoom port; adding new areas, features, and gameplay devices not possible under the original Doom engine. Knee-Deep in ZDoom is a new experience, but holds strong to the atmosphere of the original. Relive the fear. Relive the nightmare. Relive Phobos.

Very boring gameplay TBH, I'm tired of people who mistake good details for a better doom experience. Doom is all about the gameplay, architecture adds to that. This wad has nothing but eye-candy which actually gets repetitive anyway. Why don't more mappers make fun wads instead of wads that just "look great"? 2/5 for horrid, boring levels. I do give +1 for looks.

Good:uses almost every zdoom feature known. The levels are also also useually fun. The new weps and monsters add a new mood to the average gameplay of doom.Bad: sometimes backtracking is bad in some levels, like e1m3. the same goes for switch-hunting.secre ts are also hard to find. And also the levels can become hard to progress through.overall: A good set of maps, but they lost scope of the project. 4 out of 5.

Amazing detail. I was awed at first at just how great it looked, but once I started playing, I was very dissapointed. Creative liberities, you have a new name in KDiZD.

The amount of overdetailing in this WAD is legendary, and it doesn't at all to the gameplay, it detracts from it. Overly confusing layouts paired with endless switch hunts makes Eternal Doom pale in comparison. The custom monsters were haplessly thrown in at random and doesn't make it any better. 3/5.

Awesome, awesome wad. The trick ending threw me for a loop as I had played dev versions back when it was an open community project and memorized the original E1M8. My only real criticism is that the levels are LARGE. One huge level is fine, but huge level after huge level gets a bit fatiguing. Oh, and thank you for making me feel completely inadequate in my detailing abilities. How many linedefs does this thing have? --Woolie

There have been several homages to the original Doom recently, and this is the most elaborate. It's superbly well-designed, in a Lego-like way; the levels would be entertaining even if you had not played the originals (although you would be puzzled why a level called "Hangar" does not have a hangar in it). Mild puzzle elements; jumping. Could have been released as a commercial product circa early 1995. I'm not sure about the pseudo-3D sprite objects.

"KDiZD" has proven that superb architecture, love to detail, modern features, huge size and breathtaking atmosphere just aren't enough to place it among the legends. The gameplay was frustrating, too repetitive, like running around in circles.

Don't listen to the guy above me, it truly is awful. I've played it, it's a disgrace to what Doom 1 was, I've seen better remakes of E1M1 in one day that kept "strong to the atmosphere of the original" then this turd. You obviously have no clue what Doom is Tormentor667 if you think this held strong to the original, I don't remember the whole game being dark as hell. 0/5. Though it deserves a -5.

Godlike. More beautiful than any other doom set, good atmosphere, with lotta new monsters. Which is good. Doom has too few monsters. Hating them is conservatism. I hate the ADHD commenting of huge levels and taking too long to finish and the general lack of patience. I didn't get bored or lost once in the levels. Guess you only look for adrenaline rush. And of how it is similar like the levels of original I thought that was like the point. Recognizing old places in new clothes was most cool.

I wasn't impressed with the red horned demons that rush at you - they look as if they have wandered in from Super Mario Bros. In fact I didn't like any of the customer monsters. Death to custom monsters. BUT! The levels are a visual feast, and fun to play in short bursts. The whole thing is tedious if you play it in one go, because the levels are huge and go on and on and on adgaonfgaon and on. Can't wait for E2, which should be coming out some time in 2011.

If it weren't for the tedious gameplay, it might have been okay. It looks alright, but gets boring too quickly. I don't mind large, intricate levels, provided there's a clear route, but that wasn't the case here. Too much time is spent wandering around aimlessly, which only increases boredom. It's a nice technical achievement, but overall, the time spent during development was invested in all the wrong areas and there was far too much hype about it.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
