About This File

This wad tells the story of Doomguy's dreams, in which he finds himself in different situations. Past and present, reality and virtuality - all has mixed up in a dream, and only a hellfire is still haunting Doomguy, and forces him to pass through all of his nightmares.

Wad should be played preferably in PrBoom-Plus, with -complevel 9.

Great creepy adventure, but some quests are tedious.

Great atmosphere, and gorgeous detailing. However, so maps go on for way to long and requite too much aimless wandering and backtracking (like that humongous city map later in the wad).

Sadly most raters rate only the ambiance based on the texture use, which is indeed solid 5*. Decoration: 4*. Map layout: varies between 2 and 4*. But gameplay? Unclear puzzles forcing much useless walkarounds, monster / ammo balance @ UV is not good, and overall monster placement is plain awful and horribly lazy. Therefore, despite the effort, I really cannot give more than 3*. Because DooM is about gameplay above all, and for visuals only we go to a museum. It's a pity, because it could be legendary.

almost like an entire pc game. took me a good 3 weeks, with some rests in between . Total immersion. Shadowman has quite the imagination for creation. Award winning. map 9 - epic (although a bit tiring until you figure the obvious for the red key). 400 some monsters seems slaughterlike, but is not! thanks for a great experience. 5 stars

Quite tough in some places (map 7 gave more problems than it should), visuals are really neat.

another stellar creation from Shadowman, probably my favorite of the Hellfire saga. i like the realism and the gameplay, and this one only has two really long maps (MAP06 and MAP09). Twilight Town is one of my all time favorite Doom maps. and it isn't broken btw, you're supposed to shoot the switch to open the first door.

It kinda lags. Gameplay requires stealthiness w/ default monsters. It looks good though. Map reloops (I spoiled it, lol). ~4/5

If this doesn't win some kind of award, they're pulling Shadowman's plonker. The map design is generally amazing and the music suits each map well. I played this in GZDoom with no problems. I was not keen on map 7 though, and the maps don't feel optimised for a pistol start - though that could be me being shite.

This WAD has beautifully applied textures and gorgeous detailing and architecture. There are carpets on walls, but given that the author is Russian this is understandable. But the gameplay is absolutely horrible. Horrible! You're denied essentials weapons. They're hidden in visible secrets that have unknown activators. You're left with boomstick and chaingun. The layout and flow is completely fucked up. There are series of buttons that activate who-knows-what and there's a lot of senseless roaming around.

Map 09 is broken. Right after the player starting point, neither of the two doors will not open. No line defs indicating triggered events or nothing else. Every other map before that works normally, gameplaywise. - Doom Masta

I preferred the smaller maps (Ruined Street, the train). Twilight Town was way too long for me.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
