I enjoyed myself a lot with this one. The levels are fun and gameplay-intense without becoming impossible to beat. And the design is nice enough for a DOOM hellish setting. I would personally recommend this. 5* (note: played with my own rslquest.zip :-) )

^^No, I don't agree. This is a great megawad with maps ranging from pretty good to great. It's a bit more than the sum of its parts, too. Also Snakes forgot Map35 of CC4 in the text - that sure isn't a map he should be leaving off his resume!

I was disappointed with this, it tries to be kinda like Scythe 2 or Vanguard at times but somehow feels rather uninspired and banal, not exciting and charming like Erik Alm's works, for example. A few selected maps hit the spot but overall UR isn't really great. Which is understandable, seeing that the author started this over 3 years ago when he wasn't exactly a pro. Maybe now, that he matured a bit, he will provide something truly cool.

The first episode ranges from average to good, the 2nd and 3rd episodes are of a very high quality with some levels being the best I've played since Vanguard. The maps made by other authors also mix things up as well. Overall one of the best releases of 2013. 4.5 stars, so a 5 rounded up.

Completely overrated. Difficulty mostly comes from traps that surround you with enemies and often require several save-loads until you get it right, or from player being locked in limited arenas. Not fun or pleasantly challenging, just a cheap way to create artificial challenge. Not to mention some heavy hitscans abuse. Author also often commits sin of throwing enemies at player right at the beginning of map. Last third or so is pure cheapness and frustration.

It was pretty fun for the most part, up until the last 'episode'. That's when it became a slaughter-fest, which tend to get annoying fast. Also, the amount of archviles put in here is ridiculous. I swear it seemed like there were 5-10 per level. Overall, it's worth a play. Fun for most of it, but irritating in the final stretch.

Gotta agree, this is really something else when played with Brutal Doom (if you can handle the difficulty:)). Just insane.

Amazing megawad, deserving it's place among the winners of the 2013 cacowards, as well as it's place among modern classical megawads likes Vanguard and Scythe!

Excellent graphics/design and the music is very fitting too. Monster, ammo, and health placement all pretty balanced, but the gameplay just lacks a little. Just short of greatness. 4/5. -TRRobin.

One of the best maps made ever! This is a map that kept me running EVERYTIME to kill and to avoid being killed almost every second! This map rewards you with unexpected ambushes, battles that would keep you on your toes, overall - personally, one of the best wads i have ever played. This brings back the initial hype you get when you first played Doom 1 and turn it up to 11!! I'm just a relatively new DooMer, but god damn.. i'd be hard-pressed to see another wad as fun as this!

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
